Here is the thing though, using the women’s basketball example.

If there is 1 candidate who stands out above the rest than that is the person that should be hired.

However, if it is close between a woman and a man, than the woman should get the nod IMO.

Because the role model opportunity for a woman to lead a team of women is a pretty big deal and not to be taken lightly.

I don't disagree with that. But I also think that it can depend on the makeup of the coaching staff and support staff around the team. For example, if those are all or even mainly women, then hiring the male coach might bring a different perspective which can also be good for the team.

End of the day, as long as the hire is ultimately based on merit and something like gender, etc. is used as a tiebreaker, I don't see an issue.
