Neris was obviously sloppy. Gomez should have come in after Neris's third walk with game tied, at the latest. Mac sucked tonight.

I hate it when managers go into that automatic mode. The starting pitcher is done after 7 innings so we can
bring in the back inning guys. . Helickson could have pitched a complete game, or at least another inning.

If you would have said before the season that at the beginning of June the Phillies would be closing in on .500 that would have been assumed to be a good thing.

I agree. We really should be nowhere close to .500. But when you have Herrera, Nola, Velasquez, Eickhoff (3.88 FIP), Neris, and Gomez playing so well, it lets in a ray of hope for 2017 or 2018.

Yeah, no doubt. Also quick question--what is the main purpose of FIP? is it to eliminate the effect of the ballpark a guy is pitching in? (I noticed guys in Colorado all have much lower FIP than actual ERA whereas guys in places like SD generally have a FIP that is higher than ERA)

There are rumors swirling that the Phillies are shopping for a left handed bat.Hmmmmmm!

There was a Jay Bruce rumor (he's 29, .260/.314, 9 HR, but Phils can't get on base). Seems like a bad idea if the rebuild is serious since that would block Asche's shot, unclear it that's a positive. If Asche and Altherr can't hack it this year, they should bring up lefties Williams or Cozens, AA or not, to see what we really have. Howard must go, that's right, Mac.

Yeah, I agree. While Bruce is still young, his low OBP makes him too much like some other hitters they have. Plus they are in no position to be going after a guy like Bruce right now, since that would involve trading players in the farm system.

That's just a small part of it. It looks at four things- K, BB, HBP, and HR. The idea is that those are the four main things a pitcher can control (xFIP says that pitchers can't control HR). Basically, it tries to strip out external factors, luck, and sequencing. If a pitcher gives up a home run, then a single, and strikes out the next three batters, he gave up one run; whereas if he gave up the single then the home run, he gives up two runs. FIP doesn't penalize for sequencing, something the pitcher can't control. Most people use FIP as a predictive measure, but I like using it in measuring current value.

Thanks for the info. I was going to give you "Cake" but I'm still not sure if that is good or bad so I "Liked" it

Next half inning we got The Bull, The Big Piece and Big Money Ty. If we don't score 3 this inning it is all rigged.
