M's appear to be very serious in adding another bat to the lineup and especially in the outfield... Reports are, they're willing to give Cabrera the similar figures as Cruz. All I can say is make this happen! Cabrera will add that bat and outfield needs and also a huge balance to this lineup.
Imagine a lineup with cano, Cruz, Seager and Cabrera!

I talked about this in the offseason thread, I want them to sign him asap. Lets hope KC doesn't sign him tonight bc he's meeting with the Royals tonight! I think we have the most $ out of the group that's being mentioned targeting him (KC, WhiteSox, Giants & O's) but there could always be a dark horse). Forget Kemp or Upton. Unless it's Elias/Taylor. Which isn't likely.

Latest On Melky Cabrera

By Zach Links [December 8, 2014 at 7:46pm CST]
Earlier today, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that the Mariners appear to be the favorites for Melky Cabrera, but we later got word that the M’s are still looking at a wide range of outfield options. Meanwhile, the White Sox, Giants, and Royals have also been linked to him as of late. Here’s the latest on Cabrera..

  • The Royals will meet with Cabrera’s reps tonight, according to Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star (on [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]542132176351805440[/MEDIA]"]Twitter[/ame]).
  • The Royals seem to think that Cabrera is probably out of their price range, according to Heyman (via [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]542126358604689410[/MEDIA]"]Twitter[/ame]). The Mariners, he adds, are still the favorites.

Wouldn't Rios+Aoki combined cost around the same amount per season as Cabrera alone and you wouldn't have to go 5 years for those guys?

we're getting penalized because we signed cruz

since it's already been done, it actually frees us up to do anything else we want without sacrificing a 1st round pick

I'd be happy to add Melky Cabrera mostly because it gives the Mariners a good outfielder without having to give up prospects as we would have to with Matt Kemp or Justin Upton.

In comparison to Matt Kemp, Melky Cabrera would cost nearly $10m per year cheaper and we wouldn't have to give up a prospect for him.

In comparison to Justin Upton, we would only have 1 year of Upton in exchange for either Walker or Paxton, something I don't think any of us would be in favor of.

Since 2011, Melky Cabrera has hit .309/.351/.458 with an average of 12 home runs a year. He is a good, major league hitter who would be a good addition to our lineup.

Given the offensive output of our entire outfield group, Cabrera would be a serious upgrade. The 12 homer average doesn't look like much until you consider that none of our outfielders outside of Ackley were able to reach double digits in that department last year. Saunders probably would have had he stayed healthy, but he couldn't, so he finished with 8. None of our other regular outfielders even had 5.

For gods sake give thr man 4 years and 55. Front-load the contract and lets be done with this before another team comes in and gives him that extra year or higher avg of yearly $. There really isn't that good of a back up plan if we lose out. I mean I know something's up since he hasn't signed anywhere yet..because if there was an offer for 4 years I'm sure he would have taken it by now. Last thing we need is the Padres eyeing him. Hopefully Cano has some sort of effect on Melky.

Can you even do that? I thought front or back loading contracts is only for sports that have a salary cap.

Actually no. Lack of salary cap allows you to write it up just about any way you want.

That's the way I'd imagine it would be but just doesn't seem like the strongest union in the world would allow to take a 5 year $50 contract that involves the entire thing being front or back loaded. Either way I guess it doesn't matter being front, back or an evenly contract is spliced up it doesn't matter since it is guarantee.

yep, it's guaranteed.

i laugh every time i look at pujols' contract. homey's going to be getting a pay increase every year through 2021, and probably will only actually have to play for another 4 years max. he'll be "37" by then, or as the real world puts it, 42.

Doesn't he get $1 Million a year after he retires for 10 years too? Something like that. So he will get paid by the Angels into his 50's.

I guess NW beat me to the punch on the answer lol. Also the reason I say front-load is because if we can have him at his cheapest that 4th year it saves us $ when Seagers contract gets more expensive.
