This isn't a novelty. Who believes that coaches don't talk? They all tend to run in the same circles and often have mutual friends who are coaches. It's quite common for NFL coaches to get some background on potential players (i.e. what is their attitude like? What motivates them? Any off-field issues?)

High draft picks are investments. I have no issue with teams trying to make sound investments or at the very least understanding the risks involved.
