Apparently he has asked the Wild to wear Boogaard's old #24 jersey and has even asked Boogaard's family about it.

That will really get Wild fans on his side.

Was his number retired or just unavailable due to his passing?

He could lead them to the Cup, win the Conn Smythe and I'd bet the majority of Wild fans still wouldn't be happy he's on the team.

He should reverse the numbers and wear '42' - On second thought...

IDK as a fan the sooner I can associate the number with something positive the better. If it never goes to anyone else, it'll just remind me of death

What is the likelihood that ANYTHING positive will come from Cooke?

*quietly waiting for the Pens fans who said he's just "misunderstood" to come in and defend this douche move.*

What a disgusting selfish prick of a person.

If it was anyone else would this be big news? Honest question, not just trying to make a point. I really don't know what the precedent is for how long one should wait before wearing an unretired number of a deceased player. Personally I think after 1 season it should be fair game. I believe it has been 2 seasons.

What if Jarome Iginla did the exact same thing? I bet a lot of people would be saying how classy it is of him to ask the family instead of just taking it. No way of knowing for sure, and they each have their reputation to thank for it, but just saying....

The funny thing is when Jarome first broke into the league, he wore #24 for the Flames. To answer your question, julian, we hold Matt Cooke to additional scrutiny based on his long list of transgressions. Cooke is just a little less of an attention whore than Sean Avery, but if he didn't think people would react negatively to this number selection, then he's even a bigger idiot than I thought.

does it change anything knowing that Marty Havlat wore the number 24 for the Wild after Boogaard left the team (but before Derek died?) idk :noidea:

initially i was all "that dirty bitch!" and then i was all "well i guess he asked nicely :noidea:"

#37 hasn't been officially retired by the Canucks, has it? I could imagine quite an uproar if somebody new to the team asked for that number.

I didn't even think this would be an issue. Were they planning on retiring the number? Someone would eventually wear it, right?

If Matt Cooke had a rep of been an asshole off the ice as well as on the ice, I'd understand the hate here, but it really seems like a non-issue.

If he goes suspension-free, Wild fans will love him within a month.

the team could have just privately told the player the number is unofficially retired. How did this info about Cooke asking become public anyways?

someone wanna pile on the cooker? everybody loves the cooker, right? lol

I guess there's some history of "unofficially" retiring numbers is similar circumstance, I wasn't really aware of that.

For what it's worth, sounds like Derek's family is supportive of the move:

It sounds like Cooke will receive that blessing from Joanne and Len Boogaard. Derek’s dad, Len, forwarded Cooke’s email to siblings Krysten, Aaron and Ryan.

“I read the e-mail and I greatly respect Matt for what he said in it,” brother Ryan Boogaard told me in an email. “I texted my dad and told him I have no issues with it. I’m very impressed with Matt for what he did by reaching out to my parents. He didn't have to do it as he could have just worn #24, but he thought of Derek and our family before doing so. I knew that someone would eventually wear #24 and I was not expecting them to reach out to us, so when Matt did, I could not have been happier.”

Being a Wild fan I have no issue with him wanting to wear the 24 jersey. Boogaard was a fan favorite because he could fight, his jersey number will never be retired so why couldn't he wear it. His asking the Boogaard family for permission is nice but I don't think it should be up to them. As far as hating the Cooke signing, he has stated that he is working on his rep and hasn't been suspended in a couple of years. Yes he had a questionable incident last year with Karlson but it wasn't proven to be on purpose. As long as he shows up and plays the game the right way he should be a good addition to our team. Good penalty killer, physical against the boards and can put the puck in the net.
