Without looking at Byrd too closely, I am OK with this trade. Johnson, while a legit prospect, is a bully prospect and the Giants are flush with that, so they can afford him.

I am assuming he will be activated for tomorrows game? Nice knowing you, Lollis...

Byrd has an $8M vesting option for 2016, needs to reach 550 PA, currently at 388.

Don't think he reaches it

Besides, it makes following the minors MUCH easier. Now we only have 8 legit "Johnson" prospects...

Carries a .361 wOBA, .220 ISO and 126 wRC+ versus lefties this year in 90 PA's

.227 ISO at home, .197 on road. .243 ISO @ home vs. LHP, .200 away vs LHP

Byrds splits (this year) do not look that bad.

He has 3x as many ABs vs righties as he does against lefties, but he is hitting lefties much better. I was also concerned about his Home/Away splits, since he is coming from Cincy, but while his home numbers are better than his road numbers, they are close enough to disregard.

Unfortunately, he is a left-fielder. So I guess that means Aoki becomes the RFer for now? Yikes!

He played RF for PHI in 2014 mostly. CIN just used him in LF because they have Bruce.

Granted, I'm not going to enjoy Giants' corner OF's play defense

He played a lot of RF when he was w/ the Mets a few yrs back..and he wasn't too shabby at it..he also still has a great arm.
That's a decent pickup for you guys, provided he's close to healthy...

I am not familiar with his defense at well. KNBR is stating it as a given that Aoki will be moving over.

What is the difference between a trade that happens now and a trade that happens before the trading deadline?

A player is put on "revocable waivers". If a team puts in a claim, the current team has 3 options...

1) pull the player back
2) trade the player to the claiming team
3) let the claiming team have the player, contract and all

If a player clears waivers, he can be traded to any team as if there were no trade deadline. Most players are placed on waivers at some point in August, even if the current team has no intention of trading them.

I thought he was too old a couple years ago when we were kicking the tires on him (around the Melky time, no?). Should be interesting if it pans out.

Thats what I thought. So really you can't expect any top notch type players being moved this time of year cause someone would claim them.
Not necessarily. A "top notch" player may have a large contract that would require some negotiation to move.

Any player who is underpaid would be snatched up in a second. No way Bum would clear waivers, for example. Kershaw, however, MIGHT because he has a long, expensive contract.

He has an OK bat. He will likely be our #4 or #5 hitter when he is in there.

I am A OK with this trade (because my opinion matters that much).

But seriously, we needed some outfield help BAD, and this is a minor move that can help that, at least versus lefties.

Johnson is okay, isn't the 100 mph pitcher from college anymore (more low-mid 90s guy). He would have had to be exposed to the rule 5 draft this year, and he would have not been protected by the Giants. He's pretty far down in the pecking order for minor league relief depth.

A bit of a gray cloud to go with the silver-lining...

For August, Byrd is slashing .180/.215/.311/.527 in 65 PAs

Man! I was just hoping they'd move Stephen up to triple A just to say that there's a Johnson at 4 different levels. And no, I'm not obsessed with Johnson's, I'm obsessed with the same last name inundating the farm system.
