I hope Brown wins it and gets chicken-winged by Doan during his acceptance speech.

Hockey gods: make it happen.

Kinda surprised that all the finalists are from the Western Conference and Brown did not have a good year.

/Patrice Bergeron should be one of the finalists.

Brown, Getzlaf and Toews?

What's the criteria again? It is named after Messier, so I assume cheap stick work and whining in place of real, actual leadership. So, I guess they got the right nominees.

Cro-magnon foreheads help.

How the fuck are we (or the voters) supposed to have any idea who the best leaders are of teams we're not a part of in locker rooms we've never even set foot in? Isn't this basically just the "which teams had good records and have captains perceived to have high grit quotients?" award?

Hey, Mark Messier (like Kevin Lowe) knows a thing or two about winning and leadership. Although, in his last seven seasons (three with the Canucks, four with the Rangers), do you know how many teams those teams made the playoffs?

I'll give you a hint, it rhymes with hero.

To be fair they were terrible teams and Messier was like 40

I would think that his "leadership" would have been better/more beneficial at 40. And if Messier's "leadership" couldn't make the difference, doesn't that just suggest that "leadership" actually isn't nearly as important as sports writers and the like keep telling us it is?

That is what continues to make this the weirdest award in all sports.

It's one thing if he did it on his own, but the fact that one guy selects nominees for an award named for himself that IS league sanctioned is just bizarre.

Of course it isn't. Especially in a fluid sport like hockey where the "leader" is on the ice only 1/3 of the time. As the saying goes - talent finger bangs leadership every time.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, yet we still constantly see a lack of leadership mentioned as a fatal flaw almost every time a team misses or gets knocked out of the playoffs. And lots of people buy into it hook, line and sinker. These narratives are written before the season even starts it seems.
