Appel gettin raked by Class A hitters

His nifty 11.93 ERA is one thing but getting hit at a .403 clip by Class A hitters is another. Only 5 starts but it's never too early to have a little fun at a hotdogs expense

yup , I'm thinking so. I hate this guy which is why I'm writing about him again. He continues to get hammered in A Ball and is showing no signs of improving. Although he did win his 1st game of the year the other day - a stout 5 inn outing where he gave up 3 ER - he's still sporting a 9.55 ERA while giving up Hr's to 19 yr olds about every 15 min. THIS is the best college pitcher for 2 yrs ? If so college ball is in trouble.

A little early to be calling him a bust, but things sure aren't looking promising for him. I can imagine the Astros are pulling their hair out over that pick right now.

Agreed. He's 23 and was drafted only a year ago.

He's definitely sucking hard right now, but I don't think it's quite time to give up on him completely. He's had a lot to adjust to in a short time, plus he had some finger issues earlier and i'm not sure if that is 100% or not.

Sucks about the time Appel ran over the OP's dog. You sound really bitter for a fan of a different team

yup for 2 yrs we were told he's "close" to being MLB ready. 2 yrs , not one. So after all the BS and hype he's barely hanging on to a #5 starter job in A Ball. Sounds good to me.

it is early to call him a real bust but the fact is he isn't very good. Another one hyped to the moon and he isn't close to moving to AA.

Lol. Hyped to the moon? He was never really regarded as a future superstar. According to John Sickels, for example, he was seen as a guy with a limited ceiling, but had a very good chance of being a quality pitcher that could log in a bunch of innings.

3) Mark Appel, RHP, Grade A-: Borderline B+. I like what I saw from him at Quad Cities: this guy is a major league pitcher if he avoids injuries. A superstar? No. But a safe bet to be a good solid starter who will log 200 innings with better-than-league average performance. Given the vagaries of the draft process, that has a lot of value.

Glad the Pirates didn't get him signed, and got Austin Meadows in that spot the next year.

truthfully he was hyped to the moon after his Jr. year and hailed as the top of the rotation starter everyone needs. After his Sr. year he was still called the best pitcher available and a top of the rotation guy who would only need a little tuneup in AA and he would be ready. He isn't any of that obviously. Not to say he won't be pitching in MLB one day becuz he most likely will. Guys drafted that high are usually given a shot just becuz they WERE taken that high. What we do know is this : he isn't nearly as good as advertised , he isn't improving much if at all , he's a bottom of the rotation guy who is already a player who was overdrafted. He simply isn't THAT good.

Appel celebrated the 4th with his second consecutive strong outing - strong by his standards.
5inn , 4R , 3 ER an Hr couple walks and another loss. Good news is the ERA has dropped to 8.91 on the season.

I think the Astros rebuild could be in trouble. They passed on Buxton, Bryant and Gray. Aiken over Rodon could be a huge miss. All three of their 1-1 picks (Correa, Appel and Aiken) have been hurt. Folty, McCullers and Appel (their big 3 pitchers) have had rough years.

Let's start off the week with an update on our fave bust in waiting. In his last start in A BALL my boy Appel continued his march to the Big Leagues. On July 10th Appel accomplished the unthinkable .... in A BALL. He puked up a 4 1/3 inn. masterpiece allowing 13 hits , 7 ER and an HR. Tough to do at any level but Appel makes it look easy. On the season he is now 1 - 4 after 10 starts with an ERA of 9.57 while the teenagers in A BALL are raking at a .376 clip.

You realize that there are just 2 'teenager' position players in the entire California league, right? And one of them is on his own team.

surely you aren't trying to claim Appel is excused for his "production" in A BALL

so after a day to think about it please tell us how you feel about taking time out of your day to find out how many "teenage position players" are in the California League. BTW I'm not going to spend time checking your "facts" but I would bet anything you are wrong ... not that it matters.
