Loss of a Fellow Hockey Player

At least some of you on here know where I am currently deployed. Thanks to our Canadian friends when they were here, there is a ball/street hockey rink here. We play about 4 nights a week (or at least when we can). We are often joined by some of the Slovaks here.

Yesterday, saw an attack on the base. I can't really say too much (though I've been told it's been on CNN already). There was one KIA....a Slovak. I was told later, he was one of the guys that came out to play hockey with us sometimes. He was there just the night before.

Any death is emotional, but when it's someone you've interacted with, it's just a bit harder.

Just want to say thanks for all your kind words of support. I knew if any would understand it would be fellow hockey players/fans.

Things here really aren't that bad, not compared to past years. But, right or wrong, you do see enough death and destruction that you become a bit immune to it (coping mechanism I guess). Like I said though, when you've played hockey with a guy, it's just a bit harder.





By the way, though I understand and appreciate the thanks for the service comments, I've never really been too comfortable with those. I serve mostly just because I love the travel and seeing new places...well, maybe not Kandahar. Now, if you ever want to send a free beer my way, I certainly won't say no

Very sad news wings. Your brother in arms will be in my prayers. Take care while your deployed there and thank you so much for your service to our country and the sacrifices you've made. My nephew went through the same while he was deployed there a few years back, and also had the same happen in Iraq while he served there. I make it a point to thank a veteran every time I meet one. Without brave men like yourself, we wouldn't enjoy the freedoms we have.
