What do you think fans? Should the Kings just resign Penner or go after Dan Cleary of the Wings? Penner is four years younger than Cleary (30 vice 34) but I've always liked the way Cleary plays.

It depends on what Penner is asking for.

Iginla signed a performance contract with a base of $.18m, maybe they should Penner one of those.

He might agree to something like that. Would depend on what offers he gets from elsewhere. Not a lot of interest is the sense that I get. No hard evidence just a hunch I guess.

I wouldn't mind Cleary for a couple years, maybe sign Pencakes to a playoff only deal and keep him on the practice squad

Meh. I don't think we'll be doing much with free agency this year. We're too close to the cap ceiling to try to make any moves. We'll see what happens though. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong.

If we don't sign anyone I wouldnt mind seeing what Frattin/Toffoli/Clifford can do on that line for a whole year.

I would rather see Toffoli with Carter/Richards myself. Lewis can be a 3rd line C if Stoll has lingering issues. Frattin/Clifford/Stoll or Lewis looks ok to me as well, but we all know King will at least be on the 3rd line all season.

Nolan seems to have already fallen out of favor and King didnt really do much of anything last season and really showed he was slow.

Atm, id like to see the forward lines look like this

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Toffoli-Richards-Carter
Frattin-Stoll-Lewis
Clifford-Fraser-King/Nolan?

Id like to see someone else on that fourth line but one of those two would be ok with me.

I think King was horrid all season and he never got sat unlike the others that fell out of favor for a mistake. Nolan made quite a few bone headed plays but I prefer him over King.

King and Nolan are both pretty much 4th line guys (3rd line at best) and not what the team needs at left wing. The team needs a scorer with some speed to back off the defense and allow easier entry into the offensive zone. At least that's what I think for whatever that's worth.

I agree with you to an extent but i think they could use a Williams type player on that line. Richards is a great set up for Carter and someone like Williams can do the dirty work to get puck control along the boards to give them time to set up.

I am okay with not spending anymore money on forwards unless the deal is just right (AKA Handzus taking $1mil to stay with Chicago). Iginla at $6mil is just criminal to me, especially when Boston had to move Seguin to make it happen. If Penner is cheap enough, I would be okay with it, but I am good either way. Every year, having cap space is more important than having a cheap solution.

I would like to see Toffoli get a chance, but there is always the Sophomore Slump like we saw with King and Nolan, so nothing is guaranteed. But I, like many, like that guy and hope he gets a chance.

I think we have a defensive problem more than anything right now. As long as Kopitar doesn't slump like last season, our forwards are okay with a line 1a and line 1b. Our depth at D has taken some big blows though with no Mitchell and now no Scuderi. I think Pitt overpaid for Scuderi and not sure they will even ice a team soon with how much money they are throwing around, but nonetheless, we are now missing a top 4 Defenseman if Mitchell doesn't come back (or can't perform like before). That is our more pressing issue I think.

The thing with getting rid of Nolan and/or King is that coupled with Penner, we just lost most of our size, which is made the Kings so hard to play against in the first place. Kopitar and Carter are big guys (though no physical), and after that we had Penner, King, and Nolan.

But to agree with you, King was bad all year, and Nolan just made some untimely errors that cost him a spot. I too like Nolan better though and think he can make more things happen.

Another guy I worry about it Clifford. He seemed off in this Playoff run and he has had way too many concussions for such a young guy. Something to really keep an eye on.

From what I read, it's a performance based contract. The base is $1.8m and can reach $6m and if he does, $4.2m would count in the next year.

It must be a new thing in the current CBA, that's what I wanted Puck here to answer .
