oh? come on 1507; you love to beat a dead horse. and that's ok, because sometimes they need to be beat. you never know, you might bring them back to life, if you hit them with appropriate force, and at the correct angle. probably more appropriate however, on this board anyway, is another pithy horse maxim; you can lead a horse to water………. you can apply either to the kevin gregg situation without mixing metaphors, and price can look like a wrangler walking to the mound to fulfill our worst equestrianistic nightmare. this one has become a recurring dream that you can't wake yourself up from. the horror….the horror.
in all seriousness, i have no earthly idea what can possibly be going through reds management's heads on this one. It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma, or however that saying goes.
it defies logic to me. a seemingly losing proposition that, as a reds fan, depresses me.
to add insult to injury, i heard a reds broadcaster call one of gregg's pitches a cutter. the thing that makes a cutter such a good pitch is its late action. hitters can't quite square it up. the truth is, there was only one guy who actually threw a cutter that he discovered by accident. so, he kept throwing that one pitch almost exclusively. regardless, i didn't see any movement on gregg's pitch at all. ah shit.
C'mon.....You're being harsh Chico...
I'm pretty sure I saw the pitch he threw Jean Segura knuckling after he smashed it into CF scoring the Brewers 3rd run.
All discussion aside, Gregg was largely ineffective most of his career considering his role. His numbers a year ago suggested his career was over. He should never have been signed and he should not be pitching in the major leagues. Almost anybody can get an out or two. Big league hitters will not let this guy off the hook and as the season bears on, it is going to get worse.
Price needs to come up with a lot of f-ing answers if he intends to hide his "other' lefthander, Cingrani, who mysteriously hasn't been allowed to pitch lately. If all Gregg can do is mop up when the game is lost, hell .... just sign a Triple-A skunk for the job.
Using Gregg in winnable games is inexcusable and the data are completely in agreement with that. The eye test would serve the rest of the equation.
Gregg was a nail biter with a 4 plus Ernie when he actually got saves. Hes declined and degraded since then. If he had to be on the roster, I'd only use him in losing blowouts, with the hope someone might pull a hammy in their 2nd AB of an inning.
No thanks Genjac...the last package the Reds got from Philly has a .127/.140/.200 slash line. I'd be afraid to see what was in the package they'd send for Gregg.
Gregg was unemployed before the Reds invitation, so in guessing if no team wanted him just for the salary, none would give up a player to get him. He's given up more runs than he has innings pitched. I know it's early, and he isn't the only bad performer so far, but he has to be a top candidate for the first Reds contract eaten this year. To be honest, I don't think Jason Marquis is far behind. There are mibor leaguers available to take their place. At what they're paying Byrd, he'll get all year to start hitting, or they'll hide him on the DL, IMO, if he doesn't before their patience is gone.
IMO, any player past 35 years old not on PED's is suspect of immediate disintegration at any given time. To sign 3 of them out of the MLB unemployment line is almost guaranteed to buy at least one disaster. It's possible all 3 will be.
Byrd has already qualified for disaster loans. He is in line to strike out about 300 times this year and so far in 16 games, he's created enough of a hole in the lineup to account for a half-dozen runs. What that means to a .500 team that has a lot of 4-2 and 3-1 scores, ... um ... plenty.
If the Reds hang onto Gregg going into May, I think that will be an overt insult to the fans. Clearly the results don't suggest that an intelligent fan base is fooled into believing that this turkey will somehow become an R.A. Dickey clone and go 23-3 some year. If the front office hasn't been reading the news or listening to the fans, it would mean they are going la-la-la with their fingers in their ears.
The way Marquis pitched last time is no better.
I am already insulted that these three clowns are getting significant playing time.
Not sure Jason Marquis is any better. If Jocketty likes the old Cardinals, he might want to check into Bob Gibson- who probably throws about his age, bit might still be faster than those two.
It's my fantasy wish that the Reds only had Gregg on the roster as a filler until Lorenzen was ready. So far, according to the Reds strategy, they will go 72-90 this year, and Lorenzen will be another year older and finally will end up going the way of Daniel Corcino. We just don't have room for him on the roster because ... we have Gregg and some other stiff.
Kind of like we didnt have room in the rotation for Chapman because we had Arroyo and no one to close...then we got Broxton, Arroyo goes away, and we trade Broxton, and bring Simon out of the pen. Then we let Simon and Latos go, and sign Marquis.
Chapman probably doesn't want to start. Just like Cingrani didnt want to relieve, and Price doesn't want to lose. It's tough for everyone to get what they want I guess.
