Jimmy Garoppolo will be an elite quarterback, and the 49ers fleeced the Patriots by only paying a 2R

Quite possibly your most sensible post EVA:clap:

I'm smarter than the average bear, I'd just rather take your lunch and aggravate you most of the time...
Slipped a little off my game there I guess.....

He might end up being good.

But....

Brady's backups have not had the best of histories when becoming a different team's QB. See Cassell and Mallett for example.

True but how many backups have left a team and had great success? Brady's have been horrible but I recall there were 4 starting on 1 Sunday, must be a record. Now what is OZ considered? Was backup in Denver, then starter, then went to Houston as starter, back to Denver as backup? I'm soo confused with that wized

Yeah, really the only "backups" I can think of that had good success elsewhere weren't traditional backups but guys who were starters but then got beat out before moving to another team. Guys like Craig Morton.

Actual backups are backups for a reason.

With backups you have to look at who is ahead of them to get a feel for if there is a chance if they have talent or not. I can tell you A.J. McCarron probably isn't that good because he can't beat out or isn't even a chance to beat out Andy Dalton who is just an average starter. Years ago I told people Kevin Kolb likely wasn't very good because of the same reason. If a backup can't beat out a middling starter they probably middling or worse themselves.

The tough part with evaluating Jimmy G is that he was a backup to Tom Brady so it's almost impossible to tell how good he is or isn't. I mean can you really fault a guy for not being able to beat out Tom Brady?

I feel pretty good about Jimmy G compared to other Brady babies for a couple of reasons.

For one he was a 2nd round pick where a guy like Cassel was a 7th round pick so clearly there is a gap in raw talent if the Pats were willing to use a 2nd round pick which is the highest they've taken a QB in years.

Secondly was reading Belichick's "body language". It's clear Belichick thinks very highly of him and they tried really hard to keep him. Probably can't say the same for Mallet or other backups that have been raised in the system.

Jimmy Garoppolo could have new contract in place before taking snap with 49ers

They traded a 2nd round pick and the way they are talking him up it's clear they have every intention of being the future of the franchise.

They could take a little bit of a wait and see approach since it's not like they have to do a deal tomorrow but I fully expect both sides to hammer something out eventually.

The question will be if Jimmy G wants to bet on himself with the franchise tag and drive up his price by playing well but I suspect the 9ers will buy high on his potential and give him a pretty lucrative deal for a QB with 96 snaps.
