And so do I. Why not? Red shirts are allowed to practice, dress for home games, and are allowed to be on the official roster for 5 seasons. Let em play all 5.

Talk about an equalizer to the blue bloods power houses eh? A team full of system guys with that extra year. Sign me up for a yes vote.

This would level the cfb playing field big time.

Am I a cfb socialist with this viewpoint?

Why would they give another year to the triangle trade?

Hadn't really thought about it.

But, right off the bat I see a problem. The # of scholarships available and having to cut players which everyone complains about already. So if you increase the # of scholarships to adjust for it, then the advantage goes back to the big schools.

Well the number schollys wouldn't change much. RS are under schollys and the vast majority of them are freshman. So regardless you 5 recruit classes on the team at any time.

Yeah but aren't you adding another year to it basically?

Why? If players in their RS year are already on scholarship then there is no change required. Only difference is you let them play? But then how many freshman are really going to play more than a couple series? Seems like a small impact...

It is a small impact. Except on the other side of the coin it is a huge impact when for one game a team has to burn a RS in an emergency say in the 8th or 9th game of the year. That is the part of this where I could see the Jimbo argument as a positive for CFB.

No because you are getting rid of RS completely and essentially adding a 5th year sr eligible without having to sit him an entire season.

If he is there, make him eligible to play. Whether it be SPecial Teams or whatever.

The Red Shirt is a clusterfuck of rules and regulations.
Just do away with it and let them play all 5 years.

I agree here and while the two issues aren't entirely related, if you eliminated going to the draft early and had kids for the full four year ride, would you need a fifth?

think it is simply 5 years of eligibility. He basically wanting to remove 5 years to play 4 and making it a flat 5. That is my understanding.

I dont think it really matters. Unlikely that I kid who plays his freshmen year will stay an additional 4 years. This is simply a way to relieve coaches from having to think about roster management. It will make teams deeper. It is way for the haves to get another advantage over the have nots.

IMO...if the NCAA want's to promote them as student athletes. It's tough to graduate in 4 years, with all the extra classes that you are required to take that have nothing to do with the degree. It is not uncommon now days that students go to graduate in 5 years, rather than 4.

So from an academic angle, I can agree.

Originally Freshmen were not allowed to compete in normal athletics. I believe that changed in the early 70s. The original thought was to allow freshman to acclimate to the rigors of college. That rule was done away with for the sake of athletics. I really dont see an academic angle that promotes freshman to play. Time has proven that is not a legitimate factor in college athletics, other than to maintain the ruse of "scholar-athletes".

Wouldn't that hurt Alabama more than it would help? Most of your elite players leave early because they are NFL ready.
