If this year is played, does it set the stage for 8 team playoff?

Been thinking about this. With major conferences going to conference only scheduling, will this push to the 8 team playoff format faster? Conference only games may become the new normal and then you just have it to where each Power 5 champion gets an automatic bid into the playoff?

I'd say 6 team playoff, with each Power 5 champ getting an automatic bid, then maybe either at large bid for another Power 5 team, or a G5 team. But then that sets up argument and debate about who gets the 1 and 2 seed bye, and with conference only scheduling the debates would be very hard to settle.

So go with 8 teams.

It's a shame B1G made the first step toward conference only schedule. Ohio State weaked out of coming to Autzen.

Id rather see all conference games anyway.

As it currently stands theres no point in playing a great OOC game. Youre punished for losing that game far far far more than youre rewarded for winning it

Yep, thankfully the Hawkeyes never have to worry about that-although the do need to worry about losing to FCS teams more than they should.

OOC is even more important to a program like Iowa. There are 10-12 programs in P5 that basically get a free loss every year and can still feel good about making the playoff. Iowa isnt one of them so theres no need to schedule a game you could lose if you can help it.

If they were going to test it, this would be the year to do it. Like how MLB is trying some things that have been discussed (DH in the NL, runner on 2nd to start extra innings, etc.).

I don't know if they have the time to actually implement something like that, but if they can and want to test it, now is the time.

I also don't know if the current contract could be "suspended" so that they could try.

Well Iowa losing to NDSU sucked but that stuff happens every now and again. I was speaking more to games you could lose semi regularly . Just no point to them OOC.

We dont anymore. We used to though. No point in it once the BCS went into place . Even less point with a 4 team playoff.
