I guess 4pm ET is fine, but 8pm ET sucks if you've got plans for dinner or going out. And then I'm over here in London, where the games are at 9pm and 1am.
The Rose Bowl wouldn't move. All CFB teams should refuse to play there in the post season until they stop their stupid shit.
keeps me and family home New Years eve! Win win scenario in my case although it says 4pm start for the Orange and I won't get home till 4:30 or so which is why I'm hoping for a long pregame national anthem and other BS to keep plays missed to a minimum.

The inflexibility of the Rose Bowl and their refusal to move off of New Year's Day the years they don't have a semi-final caused this cluster. Not sure what that has to do with it.

ESPN owns the entire franchise. They don't have enough channels to show all of the games at the same time. Plus, the huge rights fees they paid make it imperative that they show as many games in "prime time" with as little compelling competition as possible. What does that matter.
Have the playoff games at the same time or schedule around it. But play it on New Years Day.
It was done for 80 years.
That can't be all of it.
