IMO Dana sees the writing on the wall, since the extension its been 2 disappointing seasons and next year is prob gonna be rough regardless and he would be looking at WVU firing him. This way, he gets to go to Houston where stories say his family likes anyway and he still gets to be a HC for awhile longer at a G5 level school that can pay him & his family like a P5 school so..
It would work out well for everybody imo IF this goes down.
I am listening to Hoppy and Tony right now, they are saying at that Holgorsen is history, that when he let Houston ask Lyons to talk that its pretty well done. I would agree with that. There are better coaches out there

If he wants to walk, he needs to do it. I can't stand liars. He gave his word he was staying. If he had any interest in leaving he shouldn't have said anything.

On a different note. If he does go, who do we get to fill the spot?

Yup, he had hit his ceiling, realized he is not up to the job, knew he had left his offense with little talent for next year and would likely be canned next year. Good time to make a move. I have to admit, though, I hate change, there is fear in the unknown. I like the guy from Troy, seems like a good coach and quality guy. Next season will be interesting!!

Those hillbillies in West Virginia should have paid him if they wanted him to stay.

He has been paid too much, paying nearly four million a year for 7 wins is unacceptable, it was time for him to go, very few WVU fans wanted him in the first place, and he has done little on or off the field to give reason to embrace him. Good luck in Houston coach, thanks for running a clean program while you were here. What would you have paid a 7 win coach? Would you just open the checkbook and give him what he wants every year?

No. But look what going on the cheap has done to a once proud tradition at USC. You gotta pay for talent and unfortunately the market for these guys is what it is.

Hard to blame him for moving on then. he's gotta look out for himself.

the problem is that Holgorsen is NOT a great coach, he has made progress, but still can't beat good teams. In my opinion, a coach needs to have HC experience at a smaller school prior to getting the HC gig at a big school, learn the job at a smaller school, then step right into running the program at the larger school. He was making about half the money Urban Meyer was making, and is not 10% of the coach. He will go to Houston, win his seven games and be canned in two years unless his drinking bud the casino owner bails him out.....

It was time on both sides, he was offered a fair extension last month, but wanted more money, you don't get raises for sub par performance anywhere else, so why should a football coach expect a raise for no progression?

If he gets tossed out on his butt, that 20 million bucks in his back pocket will surely soften the landing

As the black folks say "Don't hate the player, hate the game". The market for guys like him allows him to do that and he'd be a fool not to.

I get the guarantee money for a saban type, but for a coach who loses 2/3 games to winning teams by 15 points.....his drinking buddy must really like him!!

He may not be great, but neither is WVU. Dream all you want WVU has never been great. Beat up on a depleted Big East, only after the powers left. How many times did WVU win the Big East without being in a tie? Could not win the watered down Big East out right. He ran a clean program, had good grades, good graduation rate, and put many players in the NFL. I don't remember a time that we have had so many players in the NFL.

A coach needs to be a HC at a smaller school before becoming a head coach is just plain retarded.......ask Georgia how their coordinator is doing as HC?

I got mixed feelings about him going. Maybe we can do better, but also a chance we can do worse. This bullshit about Doc is crazy. He can't win the CUSA, how is he going to win the Big 12? I have read a lot of comments about the next coach needs to be an alumni??? WTF does this thinking come from??? Where I come from you hire the best possible to fill a job. Who gives a fuck where they went to school, and if they have ties to the state??? This shit I hear people say that someone not from WV just can't understand WV football??? Where do these idiots get this way of thinking??? How many players are from WV???

There are a lot of things there we will have to disagree on, I will always stand by my thinking a coach needs to learn at a smaller school. Engineers first project is not designing a 747, it is working on a Cessna, you learn the JOB, then grow into the bigger job that has more responsibility. Most GREAT coaches have worked their way up the ladder, yes there are examples of coordinators doing well, but tried and true is much better way to do it.
No, WVU is not great, likely never will be, but the right coach can make us a reliable contender, I often wonder where we would be right now had Fraud not gone nuts after losing to sPitt??????
The alumni crap should not come into it at all, I think people think one of our own won't bail out on us, but that did not work last time..........
Holgorsen showed this year that he had reached his ceiling, he had the talent on the team to win the league, but his mighty offense gave it away against OSU and OU, blame the defense all you want, but one RUNNING first down against OSU in the last five minutes rather than twenty yard incomplete passes and we win...... Secure the ball and play the next down after a sack TWICE against OU and we are 10-1 and in the Sugar Bowl. I will forgive and forget the IAST game, those happen where you just run into a buzz saw!!
WVU football will go on, I hope Lyons has someone in mind who is able, can use the players we have, and committed to win. I hope the new coach has the work ethic that Fraud had, the heart that Stewart had, the loyalty that Nehlen had, the faith that Bowden had!!!!!!
