you do realize that the AP National Championship is THE national championship right... and Michigan won that in 1997... they finished second to Nebraska in the coaches poll... because their coach was retiring. The coaches poll is a secondary poll.

I'm pretty sure that the national championships in the BCS era were based on the Coach's poll, not the AP poll, so that should tell us which poll is more important.
