PREGAME NOTES: Freddy Sanchez officially out for the year; Huff set to start tonight | Giants Extra

Second baseman Freddy Sanchez had back surgery Thursday and will not return this season.

Sanchez had been in Arizona rehabbing from shoulder surgery when he hurt his back. He originally had an epidural to ease the pain, but was never able to return to exhibition games. Dr. Robert Watkins performed the microdiscectomy in Los Angeles, and a piece of a disc was removed.

“This is definite now that he won’t be back this year,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s been a long road this year. I know he’s disappointed, but he certainly played a critical role in our success in 2010. He helped us win a World Series.”

Sanchez, 34, hit .292 for the Giants in 2010 and was a key postseason contributor. But he dislocated his right shoulder while making a diving stop last June 10 and had surgery on August 2 to repair his labrum and rotator cuff.

Sanchez started a rehab assignment for the San Jose Giants in late April but was shut down after feeling discomfort in his shoulder. When Pablo Sandoval went down, Sanchez tried to return as a third baseman, where he thought the throws would be easier on his shoulder. But he was shut down shortly thereafter when his back injury flared up.

Sanchez is a free agent after this season.

— Aubrey Huff was removed from last night’s San Jose game because of soreness in his sprained knee, but Bochy said “he’s good to go.” Huff is in San Jose’s lineup as the designated hitter.

— Bochy said he told Justin Christian several days ago that he would start tonight. “It’s a left-hander going and he needed a start. (Ross) Detwiler has been very, very tough on lefties.”

That’s an understatement. Lefties are hitting just .113 against him this season with a .473 OPS.

Color me shocked as Hades!
