The right move - even if it's dead money if he's not claimed, he doesn't need to be on this team

What day is it? I saw the headline and jumped so high I hit the ceiling and knocked myself out. Saves only $950,000 on the cap but at least we don't have to see him play. The sad thing is that if Hexy tried to bring him back up, he could get claimed for 1/2 cap hit for both teams. I still be he would go unclaimed. That, however, would be better than a buy out.

It's also funny how some in the media are posting how a lot of people were for the trade when it 1st happened. I myself was probably in that group. When we got him he was in the last year of a k that paid him $550,000. For his shot blocking ability alone he was a value at $550,000. The problem came with the 6 yr. $30 million deal as he is at best a 3rd pairing shot blocker. If he had been signed to a 4 yr./$12 million k. we would still be complaining but he would be in the NHL.

I really hate to blame the player for any deal but he can cry every day in the AHL and still collect more than the entire Phantoms roster combined.

Re-entry waivers went away after the lockout. MacDonald can be brought back up without any possible penalty.

There goes that hope/. Oh well.

Would some team be interested in trading for him if the Flyers were to eat $2.5 mil/yr? I would think so, I just don't think the Flyers have been willing to do it to date. Perhaps when the inevitable injuries occur, or at the trade deadline...I'd be willing to do it if I'm the Flyers.

If we could trade him and save half the cap hit id do it in a minute even if it was for a 4th rounder.

yep, I'd do that too. As long as eating salary/cap hit are the only things the Flyers do to sweeten the pot. Any trades involving picks or prospects in addition to macdonald, just to get rid of him, should be ignored.

A bit of a surprise but maybe a wake up call? Worst case you have a guy down there that can come up in a pinch and not be totally green...the problem is that they have better options already. Sometimes you can't fix all of the problems out there...so this may be the best option.

From Bill Meltzer:

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said the move was not want what the team wanted to do, but both Scott Laughton and Brandon Manning earned opening night NHL roster spots with their preseason performances. Hextall admitted the team "tried to do some things" on the trade market but nothing worked out or was close to getting done.

Hextall added, however, that he expects the Flyers to recall MacDonald "at some point." He said the player was stunned by the decision but is professional enough to deal with it and move forward.

The GM declined to go into specifics as to why the team waived MacDonald rather than Luke Schenn. The likely reason: Schenn has an expiring contract and a more moderate cap hit ($3.6 million), which would have made him about a 50-50 proposition to be claimed. Conversely, the term and cap hit on MacDonald's deal make him very unlikely to be claimed off waivers. As such, the team retains both players and greater flexibility to make trades during the season. Schenn remains a candidate to be traded at some point.

With Laughton ($863,333) making the NHL roster and $950,000 coming off of MacDonald's cap hit, the Flyers are currently about $670,000 under the NHL's salary cap ceiling.

This is a HUGE stance for Hexy to take. He can't make the trades that people know he wants to make, so rather than send down the younger players because of your contractual mistakes won't go away.

Is this the move that wins the Cup, no...but it is refreshing to see the Hexy take this stance.

Yep this goes with his way of thinking that players have to earn their way on the team and he did say before that if a player earns his way onto the team then he'll find a way to have him on the roster
