20 years ago, the Big East was a quite real football conference with teams and everything. Some of them were even ranked. Eventually about half the conference would be absorbed by the ACC before turning into the American Athletic and having its "We're an Actual Power Conference" license revoked.

Still, in 1999 the Big East was riding high and had attracted the attention of ESPN's College GameDay. Their game of the week was Syracuse at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. SU had Paul Pasqualoni as head coach while VT was head coached by Frank Beamer and the height of the Beamer Ball Era. At this point in history, the Hokies have a young man named Michael Vick and with GameDay in town, Vick was ready to treat the Orangemen like a bunch of tortured dogs.

By the time the dust had settled, Western New York sports fans were ready to forsake all things maroon as well as Metallica as "Enter Sandman" may give them unhealthy flashbacks to October 16, 1999. That's the night the Hokies committed an act of beatcrush on their Big East rivals.

SU had gotten off to a good start at 3-1 including rivalry wins over West Virginia and Pittsburgh. VT was unbeaten and had taken their first 5 opponents to the woodshed for hard discipline. Their closest victory up to this point was over Clemson by 20 points. They had also beaten Virginia after losing their previous 2 matchups and by the way, the Cavaliers have beaten the Hokies once since then.

Much like Thunderdome, 2 enter, 1 leaves. Virginia Tech would leave Syracuse lying in a pool of its own squeezed out juice of sorrow, 62-0. To date, this is still the biggest blowout/shutout in College GameDay history.

Syracuse wasn't the same after this loss, going 1-3 the rest of the way before using the Music City Bowl as a salvage mission. They would get the win in Nashville over Kentucky and finish 7-5.

Virginia Tech kept rollin' rollin' rollin' (what) through the 1999 campaign and like SU would get wins over Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The Mountaineers would be the only team to truly challenge the Hokies, losing to VT 22-20. Of course all of that came crashing down in their bowl game season finale against Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, because Beamer Ball had serious side effects like that. Still, an 11-1 season with an undefeated in-conference run ain't too bad.

Thanks to PSC Highlights for the highlight package, we can now relive this as I'm sure VT fans will be happy to do. SU fans perhaps not so much.
