2002, 1 play and they were undefeated, 3 plays the other way and they would have 4 losses
2009, 2 plays and they are undefeated, 5 plays the other way and they would have 7 losses

This year. 3 plays one way and Iowa is 10-2, 3 plays the other way and Iowa is 4-8.

You can pick 1 play a game that makes a difference between this season and what 2009 was.

Exactly right. Pretty sure that's why this thread was created and why there's so much unsettlement amongst Hawk fans.

uh, it's way more than 1 or 2 plays, please put away the crack pipe...to even think it is 1 or 2 plays is ridiculous

Jerms,

I'm with Hawkeye on this. You need to throw in about 50% of the plays (maybe more) from every Iowa game - including the defense. KF has gotten in the way of far too many plays this year for Iowa to be better than a 7-5 team. As usual, he blames the loss on one or two plays being the difference. And it usually is the players fault for not executing the plays called.

It's pretty pathetic to call the wrong plays and then blame the players for the ensuing disasters.

My point is that the 1 or 2 plays either way were against MVC and MAC schools as much as P5 teams. KF teams are notorious for playing down to the competition and notorious for getting beat by Iowa St.

It's not acceptable.

If your aunt had a dick she'd be your uncle. Worst argument on the planet. You could also say that we are 1 or 2 plays away from being 5-7 considering our close wins too.

Maybe we just arent any good?? I know its cool to blasme the staff ( and to a degree I get that ) but maybe we "fail to meet expectations" because our expectations are wayyy too high?? I dont want to be a fan of a team that is happy going 7-5 but the reality is that aside from 2009 we are pretty much a 7-5 type program over the last 10 years. If that was a 1/2/3 year trend then I wouldnt say that but at 10 years maybe we just arent that great of a program.. I dont know but I do know that no matter what I am not predicting anything better than 7-5 next year because that way I wont be let down.

Exactly. I understand that Iowa is not a traditional power. Nebraska is a traditional power. Oklahoma is a traditional power. Ohio State, Alabama, USC, Michigan, Florida, well you get the picture.

10 wins in a season by those teams is underachieving, even if they have a monster schedule. They don't expect a 10-win season, that is the mark to call the season not a disappointing season, unless it is an easy schedule. Iowa may have 2 decades of experiencing success in my lifetime. They were strong in the mid-80s to early 90s. And had done good in 2000s. 1 Heisman winner and 1 NC.

I compare Iowa is in the same level of expectations as Oklahoma State, Arizona, Arizona State, Mizzouri, and teams like that. They don't have the best recruiting. They have seasons where they dominated, but seasons where they failed to reach expectations. Their back ups are not as good as the starters.

See, this is exactly why you HAVE to factor in Kirk's salary. To simply say "We aren't very good" holds water only if you don't have one of the highest paid coaches in the entire country. You're highly compensated for a reason, you have higher expectations than these other run-of-the-mill programs like Purdue/Illinois/Minnesota/etc.

There is a reason why you order a Big Mac without cheese and it comes with extra cheese - those $7.25/hour morons are not highly compensated and, thus, expectations are low for them. Conversely, Apple's CEO who makes a $5 million base salary and gets $20 million in stock options had better produce big returns for his shareholders and had better come out with the best gizmos year after year.

See how this all works? It's capitalism at its very best.

If you want to put it into football terms, there is a reason people are not throwing Kevin Wilson at Indiana under the bus. He's the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten and no one expects Big Ten championships out of someone who's at that level of pay.

And for the record, we aren't very good. Just thought I'd throw that out there too in case you thought I was arguing that point!

Honestly a big part of Ferentzs issue stem from the earl;y success he had. In 2002-2004 Iowa had BY FAR the best 3 year run we have had the last 40 or 50 years. That set up some sort of expectation that that would be a semi frequent thing. Now that we are back to the 7-5/8-4 with an occassional 10 win season the fans are upset. Ferentz is paid too much for sure but he is also the most successfukl coach in Iowa history ( yes even more so than Hayden, at least as it pertains to national acclaim ).. Its a Catch 22 IMO. You cant afford to pay him 4+million a year for 7 wins but you also cant afford to cut him looose, pay him anyway and then try and find a guiy that will do better than 7 or 8 wins a year. It sucks.

Ha, don't lump Missouri in there, sure they sucked but here is Mizzou's record lately:

2007 12-2
2008 10-4
2009 8-5
2010 10-3
2011 8-5
2012 5-7
2013 12-2
2014 10-2

so 75 wins in 8 years with one bad year, in there, that's 9.4 wins a year, Iowa has 60 wins in the same span for a 7.5 win avg...two less wins a year. Trust me, Tiger fans here have expectations now.

....and what is Gary Pinkel's SEC type salary? It has to be more than KF's

As of March 6, 2014, he was extended to 2020 with a base salary of $3.1 million per year plus he will get incentives, so he might match KF this year since he went back to back SEC East champs. This doesn't count anything else, like Nike money, radio money and all that, but I assume KF earns that too.

So 15 more wins over 8 years for a crapload less salary.

What? You're telling me KF makes more money than 11 SEC coaches, more than every Pac12 coach (twice as much as Oregon) and more than every ACC coach?

How dare Iowa fans expect more than 7 or 8 wins! KF's family is getting subsidized cheese and peanut butter and the fans are being such dicks.

You bleeding heart motherfuckers can kiss my ass.

Barta will get fired before KF will. Then the new AD will fire KF with one year remaining on his contract.
