“I care about him greatly,” said Banning, who lost touch with Sandoval after the 2011-12 offseason. “But it's a tough love. He needs to be smart enough to say there's a problem. It's like the alcoholic that won't admit he's an alcoholic: well, you can't address that you're an alcoholic if you don't ever admit there's a problem. He's got to address that.

“He's proven to me and shown consistently that he's got to have somebody like me holding his hand doing that. And it's not an exercise thing, it's an eating thing. Obviously exercise is an important factor in it, a very important factor, but eating is going to be the component that needs to be managed and monitored. We had a chef on staff that cooked all his meals.”

“You need the babysitter,” said Banning, who said he has not spoken to the Sox. “Hey, that's a pretty harsh statement. At the end of the day, I'm speaking truth. … I love the guy.”

I chuckled a bit when I read the article on yahoo this morning. Panda should hire a deluxe security force to guard his pantry from him

Giants fans already knew all of this. I think the 2011 offseason was affectionately called Camp Panda and t-shirts were even made by Pablo's brother.

When I read that, it made me Snicker. He certainly hasn't earned his $17.6M Payday, much less 100 Grand. Sandoval was such a Butterfinger last year, and I'm glad Shaw has gotten the opportunity at 3rd base. He's gotten way too Chunky.

The irony is in the last sentence of the story. Panda hates sitting on the bench hence the fake injury. Isn't the easiest way to get off the bench to go on the DL? God help me if he actually tried to get his shit together, admit he has a huge problem, and do SOMETHING that shows he's serious about playing and getting his starting spot back.

I haven't followed the fake injury closely. A buddy told me the team doesn't want him around right now. IDK if that's true.

Panda moving to a cauldron of baseball stress like Boston was probably a really bad move given his condition. Interesting how he and Hanley came from relatively laid back (at least as far as baseball is concerned) West Coast teams to Boston at the same time and both completely sucked it up last season.

The MRI seems to question your "fake" injury theory.

But we'll see.

Always wondered about that. When he was in San Fran, one of our announcers Mike Krukow, commented on how much the criticism in SF was bothering him. Now he is in a place with 100 times the criticism coming at him in all directions. He had it easy in SF compared to Boston.

Add to that the fact that he was home-grown son in SF while he is a merc in Boston.

Home-grown kids get 1000X the leeway that mercs get.
