Alabama Crimson Tide Marlon Humphrey leads list of redshirt freshmen to watch in 2015 - ESPN
By Tom Luginbill

Redshirting is not a popular term among the nation's top football prospects, but a quick look at the recent Heisman Trophy winners shows the importance of that extra year of development. The list below may not include the next Jameis Winston or Johnny Manziel, but we feel these players, once prominent recruits in the 2014 class, are in position to make big debuts in the 2015 college football season.

1. Marlon Humphrey (Alabama)
-- A youth movement is going to be underway on the perimeter for Alabama this fall and while 2014 classmate Tony Brown saw some time last year, Humphrey will be joining the fray in 2015. Humphrey fits the physical dimensions coach Nick Saban wants at corner. The former five-star is big, can run and is savvy when it comes to playing different schemes.

2. Will Grier (Florida) -- It's anybody's guess who will be the starting QB in 2015 for Florida with a new offensive scheme, new head coach and the transfer of former starter Jeff Driskel. Treon Harris started games as a true freshman while Grier continued to develop with a much-needed redshirt year. Expect this to be a great battle and it would not be a surprise if the former No. 3-rated dual threat breaks out at some point during the 2015 season.

3. Derick Roberson (Texas) -- If there was a player who needed a redshirt year from a physical development standpoint it was Roberson. With a need on the edge for the Longhorns this could be a big year for him, especially as a designated pass-rusher. The former No. 8-rated defensive end has length and quickness to get the edge and now added size to incorporate power.

4. Jeff Jones (Minnesota) -- With the departure of David Cobb, the race to be the starting tailback for the Gophers is wide-open. Jones, a former ESPN 300 RB, may be the youngest contender in a position of depth, but also may be the most talented, which will earn him a role in some capacity. He has size and speed and with more experience, he should see more touches.

5. Jabrill Peppers (Michigan) -- The best thing that could have happened to Peppers was to redshirt because of an early-season injury. He is likely the most talented, skilled prospect on Michigan's roster and is now a year older, bigger, faster and stronger. The former five-star could play safety, corner or nickel.

6. Damian Prince (Maryland) -- The Terps lose starters up front and after an offseason in the weight room, Prince looks ready to bolster that unit. The former No. 3-ranked offensive tackle has transformed his body and adds major value with his ability to play either guard or tackle.

7. Holland Fisher (Virginia Tech) -- With both safety spots being vacated to graduation, the versatile Fisher, a former Under Armour All-America selection, is in position to land a starting job, a traditionally strong position at Tech. He has the coveted skill set to play the run in the box or cover in the back end.

8. Solomon Thomas (Stanford)
-- Stanford loses a lot of bodies up front and Thomas has bulked up in a redshirt season to play the 5-technique DE spot of the Cardinal, an ideal spot for his skill set. The No. 25 overall player in the 2014 class will be counted on to make a difference in the trenches and he has the well-rounded skill set to do so.

well, I'll be watching Jerrod Heard, quarterback. A most important position for the team.
