Walter's mistake was he didn't go after the ball. He waited for it to come to him. Had he gone for the ball, he probably has it.

It looked like Walter was playing for a collision..... Trying to knock the ball up in the air instead of grab it with his hands. He was probably surprised he had a shot and will certainly be kicking himself when he sees the film.
