This is a team that has quietly (rare to use the term "quietly" in New York) done a nice job developing young talent with the limited draft assets they've had in recent years. They've also cleared enough cap space to potentially land two max stars next summer. They would just need someone to absorb the final year of Allen Crabbe's contract, which is entirely plausible.

If the Nets were smart, they would extend RHJ and NOT D'Angelo Russell. When it comes to young studs in New York - Until Kevin Knox proves himself as an NBA-caliber player,

RHJ>>>Knox.

Meanwhile, the Knicks are said to placing all their eggs in Kyrie Irving's basket...Kyrie Irving free agency rumors: Knicks to make Celtics star their 'No. 1 target' next offseason

In order for them to land a second star (Durant or Jimmy Butler), they would need to rid themselves of all their major salaries - Tim Hardaway Jr, Lance Thomas, and Courtney Lee (plus they still have to pay Porzingis).

Unless they show they are getting the basketball right, I'll be surprised if they land anyone of note this coming off-season.

They have the market, but as we saw with the Lakers, until a team shows that they are getting the basketball right and have stability in the FO...it's going to be very difficult to land anyone significant.

They don't have to finish with a winning record, or even make the playoffs, but they do need to show that they are headed in the right direction.

Been through this before...

Revisiting Jay-Z, LeBron James, and the Nets’ 2010 Free Agency

With the way superstars are piling on bandwagons to win a ring at any cost, I think the odds to build a contender that way seem unlikely.

Back then, guys were still about $ and still nobody wanted to come.

Literally the only thing Brooklyn has to attract stars is the market and cap space. if they find 2 players who want to team up and play in NY, like Butler and Kyrie it might just happen.

But, they need a lot of things to go right for them to get this done.

Sean Marks has basically done all of this since joining the Nets

He's done OK.

He traded away Bogdonavic. Dude was a baller.

He got a first round pick out of him which was solid. Due to the previous GM, he was put into a position where he had to find a way to get a first round pick. That all ends this year.

Bogdonavic was solid. Nothing special. He is what he is. A role player who is primary a 3 pt specialist.

That pick turned out to be Jarrett Allen who had a solid rookie year

Well Brooklyn at least has draft picks going forward. Everything points towards Brooklyn becoming an attractive destination, given that they don't do something stupid with their cap and are prudent about who they retain long term.

7 years ago the same could have been said about Golden State. They need things to go right, but there's potential there given their market and cap flexibility.

Sure.

But how many guys on Brooklyn's current roster do you see as potential core players in good team?

Dinwiddie, RHJ, Allen and Levert are all solid, but I don't think any will ever be anything more than a league average starter type. I could be wrong there, but I don't see it at the moment.

As @trojanfan12 said, you usually need more than just a market to attract star talent. It is possible the Nets get somebody next summer, but I will be betting against it until I see it happen with my own eyes.

Lastly, if they do sign 1 fringe max type, they will be in that purgatory range nobody wants to be in.

Drafting well would be a key component here, I agree. But they do have their draft picks, so it remains to be seen what they can accomplish before free agency starts. They have their own first this year as well as Denver's (top 12 protected I believe).

Jarrett Allen looked nice in spurts last year in the few games I saw. He's only 19 too, with plenty of room for growth. They drafted Musa who's highly regarded as a euro-prospect. Yeah there's tons of work to be done, but there are lots of working parts here that can play a factor.

Why would they do that? Two ball dominant scoring guards.

Might be a 43 win team, and then you're just stuck with the #15 pick in the draft for years.

I'd rather see them get a few years of high lottery picks in and see where they're at.

Butler can play SF.

IRving can play PG or SG.
