Or are you fine with an offseason similar to the 2012 season. Ellsbury, Choo, Cruz? Who would you be happy with, and who would you be pissed off with?

Choo is .215 vs LHP. Forget him. We could use a RH power hitter since it's unclear if and when Franco might be given a shot and I think they should drop .227 JMJ off the bench. Ruf needs to play everyday and should hit 30 HRs. But can he improve his average?

Nelson Cruz, 33, hit 27 HRs this season in 105 games. He hits both LHP annd RHP as well, and is .290 with rips and runners on. The problem is you have Howard at first, Ruf in RF, Revere in CTR, and Brown in LF. He'll be looking more than $10 mill+/yr so I'm not sure if he or anyone like him would be a fit. If Ryan were to end up lame or was having a bad year, he would certainly be worth it as opposed to bringing JMJ off the bench (if Amaro keeps him). Cruz would be an expensive investment (winning costs $) but the Phillies can handle the money.

Amaro will pay Cruz at least 45 million on a three year contract, maybe even more. Pence got 17 million per,so agents will use that in comparison.

Amaro loves to spend money. Cruz would be a decent pick-up.

Cruz would seem like a decent fit because he is right handed but I don't like him because of the PED suspension. You don't know how much he was helped by PEDs, whether he will still be able to get them and pass tests or whether he will stop using them and suck like Melky Cabrera.

I want a big signing, because most times, you have to pay money to get good players

Ruben Amaro Jr. was cheap last offseason and he got the results he deserved - Michael Young wasn't very good, Ben Revere was good for a month but that was it, Mike Adams was trash, John Lannan was trash and Delmon Young was even trashier

How about neither? Since signing any of those three is an awful decision and the clownish moves from 2012 was equally retarded.

Are there really teams that do not want to sign big name free agents? IMO, it is well more a case of can or can not than it would be just don't want to.

Not so much with the big name free agents but more so with the young prospect players. :thumb:

For the Phillies sake, I personally don't think any of our prospects are guys that are going to be big time players, I would move any of them in a heartbeat(maybe w/ exeception of Jesse Biddle since he's a pitcher) to get a more proven guy(like a Giancarlo Stanton)

I wasn't saying the current young prospects are all that is needed, I'm saying they should work on acquiring more promising young prospects. It seems to be about time to start over and build a new strong young team from the ground up around current strengths. That's just my thinking.

Yes, there are teams that wouldn't want any part of those players. Trust me, if the Phillies want one of those players, they can get them.

Trade Brown, Revere and a prospect to Miami for Stanton. Sign Choo and Beltran . Platoon Ruf and Howard . Bring up Maikel Franco. Now you have a legitimate offense.

Signing Choo to a 3 year 75 million dollar deal would be a great signing, and is somewhat realistic, although more likely he will take the bigger years and money that he can surely get elsewhere.

Ah context.....

I was speaking very much in general, and not just about this years crop of free agents. And, other than the top 5 maybe, there is not a ton of guys to target, to be sure.

I'm tired of the Stanton talk. I don't want the guy. It will take a shitload of good prospects to get him, and his production will not be enough to put the Phillies over the top. He was injured in 2013, saw his walk rate decline, average dip below .250, and a slugging percentage drop off of around 150 points. I know he was in a AA Marlins lineup, but the Phillies don't need to deplete the farm for this Hispanic Darin Ruf.

Seriously, in over 40 less games, Ruf only had 10 less home runs, and his batting average was just 2 points lower than Stanton's. Furthermore, the Marlins' GM explicitly said that Stanton isn't on the trade market. Marlins GM Dan Jennings says Giancarlo Stanton is not available on trade market | SI Wire
