Assuming his play remains at its current level through the rest of the season, what do you see his next contract looking like?

Hard to say, maybe three years at four million per year?

I think I would still consider trading him today. I bet they could pull some serious value out of his recent play and contract situation.

Cobie's 3 years, 4 mil per, would be a nice deal though. It's more than I'd like to pay, but I'd pay the premium to keep it to 3 years.

I think if we were ever gonna trade him now is the time. His stock will never be higher than it is today

I liked to to see an MDZ trade for picks and dumping salary.

I have to believe since MDZ did not move that we will see any extension in the near future. I would be real surprised if Hexy did not have several offers for him.

agreed. I have very little doubt he would have been moved if Hexy didn't plan on resigning him. And I'm fine with that. Would've liked to see the value they could have gotten for him, but the way he's playing, I'm perfectly OK with seeing him on the roster the next few years.

Either I have forgotten the RFA rules or never knew them to begin with. I know Scheen and Couts are playing on reasonable deals because they were RFA's. Can Hexy offer something along the lines of 2 years $2.5 per year to get a longer look at him and keep him relatively cheaply? If he did and MDZ rejected what happens. I know if he signs an offer sheet we have the right to match or get a draft pick. I would like to see him back but not a $4.0 per year as we are handcuffed by the defense contracts for yet another year.

I think the answer to your question is yes, we can do the same type of deal with Del Zotto. Too lazy to look it up, but I think you remain under RFA status until you've hit 27 or 5 years of service time. Not 100% on that, but it sounds right.

Ok, got curious and looked it up. Players remain RFA until 27 or 7 years of service time.

Yep, and the contract situation is essentially what you described. The flyers have the option to match any contract Mdz signs. If they don't, they get picks pending on the cap hit of the deal signed.

So Mdz could refuse a 2 mil contract, if no team offers him more, he can either hold out or sign the deal.

Thinking it through, Hexy must have a good idea what will get it done. I was going to say 2.5 per for 2 years or take the picks if he goes elsewhere. Then I realize Hexy probably would have done better by trading him at the deadline if he wanted picks. This leads me to believe he will be signed.

agreed. they could have gotten at least a 2nd for him at the deadline I think, and I'm pretty sure the scale is like 4 mil for a 2nd or something like that.

I expect they'll resign him now.

I was thinking something like 2 years, $3mil per. He'd be a UFA after, so still has a chance to play himself into a big payday in FA. Flyers buy some time for their prospects to develop.
