OVERTIME:
Oregon scored 7 on the first possession of the overtime in the game @ASU.
ASU then managed to get to 1st and goal on the 8 yard line.

ASU threw a pass incomplete, but was also penalized for illegal man downfield, a 5 yard penalty.

Oregon took the penalty which pushed ASU back to the 13, but it was 1st down again.

Would it better to decline the penalty and have it be 2nd and goal from the 8?

Discuss.

Unless rain or other conditions are making it hard to pass... or the team is a run-only team... I think I'd decline most times... funny that it wasn't even a thought last night... not even for a 41-41 regular-time game... luckily, you guys have me here to fix football coaches' strategic problems.

Yeah, against Pitt or GT I would've accepted it. Against Texas Tech or West Virginia I would've declined it.

Putting Pitt or GT behind schedule makes defense a lot easier. Against a team that can score easily though you just don't want to give them another chance.

I think a team with a defense as bad as Oregons should be declining all those penalties. Never give them an extra down because they're most likely going to get the yards. I used to hate when our defense was bad and we'd accept penalties and back teams up and then watch them convert on second and 35

Take the penalty. 3 downs to get 8 yards, need 2.7 per down. 4 to get 13, 3.25 per down. On 1st down you almost always take the penalty, it gets more interesting on 3rd down.

They should've taken a knee at the 10 yard line so they could KICK THE FUCKING FIELD GOAL BEFORE TIME EXPIRES!!

While numbers are relevant, yards aren't usually gotten in steady chunks.

Ok so I feel a sleep in the 4th Q the only thing I can take from this situation is was this in overtime? 2nd if it wasn't then I believe if you decline a penalty the the play clocks starts, and if the penalty is accepted the clock starts on the snap! So I can see why it was accepted was to save time!

The OP says "OVERTIME:" as the only thing on line one of the posting.

Always relevant. Adding 40% in yards is bigger than 25% in downs. The biggest issue being 3 plays or 4. It just isn't significant. It's huge on 3rd down, not 1st

Ha. Adding 40% in yards? Did you really write that?
It makes a hell of a difference if it is 5 more yards or 25. Dude.

It is a fact. Declining the penalty makes it essentially 1st and 8 f you normalize the situation (3 downs to get 8). 1st and 25 would be 150%, so yes that would be much different, irrelevant but different
