Best news I've heard all day long - now the Lakers can re-sign Gasol, get a top nine draft pick at the very worst and sign a big market free agent to be in the hunt. The question is who will be the head coach

Byron Scott - He groomed Chris Paul and did good things for New Orleans - definitely would be a good choice

Michael Cooper - coached the Sparks and won games and championships - has good back ground in the NBA, but might be a bit older

Derek Fisher - I don't like this choice at all, but it is out there

Just because D'Antoni is gone doesn't mean Gasol will re-sign back

Unless we get him considerably cheaper - I say who cares. The guy was beat up last year anyway. I do think, however that with the right coach using him where his talents are the best that he would be an asset to the Lakers BUT NOT AT 19 MILLION. 8-9 million at the most

I don't think he was as bad as some make it out.
He got picked up midseason with no chance to get to know his guys in a training camp.

Then he got immediately tossed into the hissy fit of giant ego douchebaggery from D-Howard.
I don't think even Phil Jackson could have made Kobe and Dwight get along.

Then once he finally (miraculously) got them playing well, Kobe blows out his knees.

2013-2014 should not even count.
Nobody and I mean Nobody was winning more than 20-25 games with that roster.

He was not very good. But, he certainly was not the real problem.

I agree horns especially this year. Not one coach would make the playoffs or even have their team over .500 in the west with that roster and with all the injuries they had to deal with

the HC is NOT the LAL problem. When coaches come in and out like like Dwight goes through **** stars then that is all management.

D'antoni can't be completely blamed for all of the problems, but He can be blamed for making a bad situation worse. The Lakers would have been better off keeping Mike Brown longer the season before, but the year before they would have been even better to have hired Brian Shaw or Byron Scott. The problem is D'antoni runs a system that is not a good fit with the players the Lakers had and I do blame D'antoni for running a high paced system that put the aging players at a greater risk for injuries, playing Kobe 48 minutes and not using Gasol in the paint where he is more effective.

He quits before he is fired - Everyone should have known it was coming when it was announced his brother took a head coaching job for some university and he was asking for them to pick up the option for the second year. He wanted their guarantee for two more years and there was no way in hell they had that much confidence in him

Pops turned Danny Green and Patty Mills into NBA players. My guess is he could have taken that LA D-Fenders roster and won 40+ games. But he's probably the only one

The fact remains that his system has never made it to the finals let alone win a championship - He's just not that talented as a head coach -I am glad to see him gone. I agree that he didn't have much to work with, and no one else could have done much better, but I'm still glad he is gone

Don't think it was ever dantoni's decision. Probably lakers gave him choice to save a little face and step down vs being fired. Brian shaw is my #1 candidate although low chances since he's already a coach. Possibly Jeff van Gundy. There's not a whole lot out there
