A team official tells ESPN Dallas the Cowboys are unlikely to use the franchise tag on free agent DT Jason Hatcher.

Hatcher is coming off a career year, while the Cowboys are extremely thin along their defensive line. As usual, however, owner/GM Jerry Jones is dealing with major salary-cap issues. With Hatcher going on 32, the tag would arguably make more sense than a multi-year deal, but the Cowboys would have to do some major reshuffling to afford the roughly $9 million cap hit.

other cowboy talk on internet

The Cowboys have yet to open contract discussions with RE DeMarcus Ware.

Dallas is currently a whopping $23.8 million over the salary cap. Coming off an injury-riddled six-sack season, Ware is owed $12.25 million in base salary. It's still very much a possibility that the Cowboys will have to release Ware outright, the likelihood of which grows every day the sides don't negotiate.

Why????

It's doubtful he will even be ready to play by the start of the season ..... much less ever get back to his best.

:noidea:

Yes, tagging Hatcher makes more sense than a long term deal. No, we aren't in a position to do it. If we cut Ware then anything is possible with regards to Hatcher and Spencer, but jerry isn't cutting Ware IMO. Also, if we cut Ware and then give that money to Hatcher we really didn't change anything we still would have a huge cap problem and an aging DL with a huge contract. Good player that deserves a big contract, just won't be from us. IMO, Spencer is actually at this point more likely to be a Cowboy than Hatcher. With the injury he may be looking at a contract half the price of what he was a year ago. Still isn't likely to happen, but more likely than Hatcher. Hatcher is looking at his one chance at a big contract and has already made it clear he is going for the $'s.

right off the Cowboys website ...... ( Spencer)
"" needs microfracture surgery and at this point, his next contract will probably be somewhere around the league minimum""

It's time to move on

Hatcher is just out for the money. He can go. Spencer was never anything special and should never had been franchised the first time. We draft Donald in round 1 and Tuitt or Kareem Martin in round 2 and this defense will be much better. These older players are an injury waiting to happen. If there was an easy way to get rid of ware it should be done, He can't stay healthy because of his age. This team has so many holes that we are in rebuilding mode

I dont think it's a matter of staying healthy ( especially with Ware.... The guy has been an iron man when it comes to missing games.

To me it's a matter of the way today's NFL is. You have to have a constant influx of youth. Signing guys at, near, or over that 30 year old mark is something you ONLY do if you are close to a championship.

3 straight 8-8 seasons says we aren't

we have no cap room to use the franchise tag but that probably means Jones will use it

I know you are being sarcastic, but that is kind of my point on all of these threads. Are we discussing what we think the team should do? Or what we think Jerry may do? To me this is clearly a 'what the team may do' discussion.

Tagging Hatcher would be Rat 2.0 IMO. 30+ guy, tackles way down, sacks up in a contract year. Draft DL

Tagging would be much different than Ratliff. It would be a one year deal. No dead money after cutting or anything else. Either way it's not in our Budget IMO.

Yrs. Tagging will make him play for a new contract again. Just don't see how it can be done with our cap where it is.

Youth movement time. Get rid of all 3 of them. There all dead weight and not worth any of the money they ask for. We can rebuild faster once we get rid of the dead weight contracts causing cap problems. But Jerry is still calling the shots, so it will be the same ole, same ole more than likely.

we should not and can not afford to use the franchise tag. we are between 21 - 25M over the cap and even if we cut Austin and restructure Romo, Carr & Ware we barely clear enough to cover our draft choices.

Hatcher will be 32 before the season starts. No reason to sign him. Let the skins sign him. We can use draft donald and dquan jones and seriously upgrade the line. Donald is going to get plenty of sacks in this scheme
