This is good news. A little more bargaining for any trades.

I was going to start a thread asking what time the toss was. It's hard to say if this ultimately will matter or not based on who will or won't be there and who Balt would have taken in our spot - they do have some similar needs. Maybe the best way to look at it is according to the draft chart. We just won what equates to a late 4th round pick. The difference between pick #16 and #17 is 50 points. That equals the 26th pick of the 4th round. Either way, this is a good thing for us. One less team in between us and whomever we think is the best player for us that will also still be available.

Another benefit. A lot of you guys want to trade back. If we do end up trading back, we just got more value in the trade as well...unless Jerry gets on the phone...

Essentially the value gained by winning the coin toss is that of a mid-4th round pick. So yes if trading back it can definitely help. I would also say of all the 8-8 teams where the Cowboys are sitting is where I would want to be. It means in the 1st 3 rounds you get the 3rd best, 2nd best, and 1st best position of the 8-8 teams. So during the premium rounds Cowboys sit close to the top of the list of that group. Means they get more value for trades (maybe) and have close to the 1st pick of the group for players in the top rounds. Now let's see if they can take advantage of that.

I believe they alternate each round.

So if we get the 1st pick of the two teams in the 1st (16th instead 17th) then they get the 1st pick in the 2nd then us in the 3rd them in the 4th & so on.

The Draft positions for non-playoff teams is decided by overall record. Teams with identical records are bracketed together and the NFL 'official' strength of schedule formula is used as a tie-breaker. A team that picks at the front of the queue for any bracket is moved to the back of the bracket for the next round. So if there were 8 teams with 8-8 records the 1st round would be: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H for example. In the 2nd round A would move to the back of the bracket order: B-C-D-E-F-G-H-A. B would then move to the back for round 3: C-D-E-F-G-H-A-B...and so on.

What might also be of interest to Cowboys fans is the 'official' strength of schedule calculation formula. The 'official' formula simply combines the won-lost record of all 16 opponents for every team. The Cowboys opponents were 'officially' 124-132. The Ravens opponents were 124-132. The Jets opponents were 125-131. Rather stupidly the formula includes the results against each given team - so if you're 16-0 your strength of schedule will be low because it includes all those losses your opponents had against you. if it was done accurately it wouldn't include those games. In theory it shouldn't matter because it only applies to teams with the same record. However, since each team plays each divisional opponent twice both results are counted twice! IE the Cowboys played the Giants twice so the Giants record is counted twice in the 256 game record. Since the Cowboys beat the Giants twice the 256 record includes the Giants 4 losses against the Cowboys. In short the Cowboys opponents 256 game record includes 22 games against the Cowboys not 16, (it also does this for every other team). Why is this important? Well the Cowboys were 5-1 in their division whilst the Ravens and Jets were 3-3. This means that the Cowboys opponents appear to be 2 games weaker than they really were. If those 6 division games weren't duplicated, (or counted at all) then the Cowboys schedule would be 2 games stronger than the ravens and 1 game stronger than the Jets. The Cowboys opponents were 115-119 in games not against the Cowboys. The Jets opponents were 114-120 when the didn't play the Jets. The Ravens opponents were 113-121 when they didn't play the Ravens. The Cowboys should really be picking at #18 rather than #16.

It's not the 1st time a team has gained a place, (the Panthers should have picked ahead of the Dolphins a few years back), but I think this is the 1st time a team has gained 2 places.

The good news is that in terms of Draft Chart points the Cowboys gain 100 in the 1st round, 20 in the 2nd round, and 10 in the 3rd round. :suds:
