Cowboy's Punter Laid Out

By now I am sure most have seen the video of the Cowboy's punter getting laid out by what to me looks like a legal hit. Seems the media is latching onto this as I have now seen multiple day. The write up basically stating the hit should not have happened, I disagree. He is a football player that was in proximity to a return that may have required at least some effort to stop the run. Since when is it not cool to block another football player. I liken this the asinine concept of " You don't make that call in the Playoffs "!!

There are consequences for kicking the ball that hard. Many people dont care for that kind of violence towards the ball. If you pop it. Then what will the players play with?

Cheap shot no doubt about it... Wasn't in the play... Punter pretty much had given up. You see the Cowboy player specifically targeting him.. With that said, it does appear the fall was embellished a little... Still dirty

It looks like a block in the back to me. Its pretty lame to hit someone from behind who isn't even making an attempt to make a play. I guess the punter will learn to protect himself from now on.

Not an illegal hit. He's a football player and like every other player he needs to keep his head on a swivel.
The only question on if it was unecessary or not is proximaty to the play. This clip doesn't show that.

True, but watching him lightly jogging I don't think he was a threat to the ball carrier.
IMO not necessary the hit the guy there, he could have simply ran up and shadowed him.

The use of hands on the back is not a foul when:

1. a player is making a personal attempt to recover a loose ball
2. the opponent turns away from the blocker when contact is imminent
3. both of the blocker’s hands are on the opponent’s side. (If either hand is on the back, it is a foul.)

it is an illegal hit. & as someone showed the clifton hit, is where the rule came from. he wasnt making a play on the ball carrier, you cant blind side them because they are not paying attention. Whether you agree with this rule or not is a different argument. It is an illegal hit however.

I think if we all look at it objectively we will all come to a 50/50 agreement on it. Jogging, walking, running or standing still only becomes an issue when he actually makes a play on the runner. It's too late after the fact to say I shoukd've blocked him.
So 50% err on caution the other 50% not so much.
Personally I think it's unecessary but I can see where a player on the field is a player on the field.
I remember a hit not long ago Richard Sherman knocked a dude on his ass 40 yards from the play. No way was the defender going to make a play. I hated the hit. Still feel it was bush league. But it was within the rules.
