Pretty good propaganda by the Oilers - Leak the $13.25 million amount, then have Connor come in and sign a $12.5 million contract and allow Oilers fans to believe he took a hometown discount.

/Now the pressure is on Draisaitl to do the same.

The biggest win for the Oilers on this contract is the term as they have locked up arguably the best player in the league for a long, long time.

$86M of the $100M contract is bonus - Oh yeah, there's going to be another NHL work stoppage.

Is there some sort of injury contingency or insurance on these long-term contracts? He's only one hit away from being an extremely-well-paid Johan Franzen.

The contract is guaranteed and Connor will get his money even if he were to suffer a career-ending injury (and of course nobody should be wishing for anything like that to happen). The only thing preventing him from getting his money is a work stoppage as mentioned above and is the reason why Connor and his agent structured the contract to be heavy on the bonus side (lockout proof).

Every time one of these massive deals is signed, I become even more appreciative of Sidney Crosby and his superstition to have an $8.7 million cap hit by rule.

My question was really from the Oilers organizational side of things.

If McDavid does have a career-threatening/ending injury, what are the ramifications on their cap and bottom dollar? With a contract that large, would there be any LTIR penalties? (Does a LTIR max cap reimbursement exist?) Would the Oilers make enough revenue to be able to (or willing to) afford paying Connor his dead money plus spend to/near the cap to field a competitive team?

As long as the Oilers remain a cap team, the would get full relief under the LTIR clause. Also, as much as I like to poke fun at the Oilers, that new shiny building and their devoted fan base will generate enough revenue to ice a competitive team (although Chiarelli will do his best to derail any Stanley Cup aspirations).

:D
