Rashaan Salaam, a Heisman Trophy-winning former running back, has died, a family spokesperson said Tuesday.

He was 42.

Someone found Salaam's body in a parking lot at Eben G. Fine Park, less than two miles from Folsom Field, and called 911 just before 9 p.m. on Monday, according to Boulder Police spokesperson Shannon Cordingly. Cordingly said there were no signs of foul play and an autopsy to determine the cause of death will be performed by the Boulder County Coroner's office.

"The Buff Family has lost an outstanding young man and a great Buff today," athletic director Rick George said Tuesday. "We are heartbroken for Rashaan and his family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very difficult time."

This is gonna fire up the concussion debate again. Personally, I'm starting to think maybe the Olympic boxing solution is the best answer, reduce protection and encourage players to protect their head instead of seeing them as a battering rams.

Salaam Was Found Dead on December 5 in a Park & His Mother Says There Was a Note
On December 5, the Daily Camera reported that a body was found at the Eben G. Fine Park’s parking lot. The man was found at 8:45 p.m. and declared dead at the scene. The man was later identified as Salaam, who lived in Superior, Colorado.

Boulder police spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly told the Daily Camera that the investigation is ongoing and there weren’t any signs of foul play. It will be up to the coroner’s office to determine the cause of death.

Salaam’s mother, Khalada, told USA Today that police told her that they found a note with the body. “They said they found a note and would share that with us when we get there,” she told the site.

Interestingly enough, he was actually one of the few players who was against pot use. He blames it for his early career struggles.
