He's not worth it and this contract is going to be an albatross.

This makes KT look like a genius for extending Goldy to a five year $32 million deal.
They are paying him to average 2.6 WAR a season. I don't have a hard time seeing him do that over the course of the contract given the age.
Yeah, don't really get the flack over this.
If anything, a few years ago, you'd think Heyward would be getting the big extension and not Freeman.
Yeah, even now that I have heard it is 135 (would be ~2.8 instead of 2.6) I see little reason not to assume Freeman simply isn't capable of doing that. If he he continues to have 4 war seasons going forward it will be worth a lot of money... for the Braves.
Eventually I think they will. But he doesn't hit free agency until 2017 so they have some time to wait and find the best offer available. So there is like a 100% chance the Fins trade Stanton now right? He's going to get a larger contract than Freeman and I just don't see them offering enough to keep him locked in.
Official breakdown of the contract.
THURSDAY: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports provides the contract breakdown (Twitter link): Freeman received a $2.875MM signing bonus. He will be paid $5.125MM in 2014, $8.5MM in 2015 and $12MM in 2016. His free agent years are valued at $20.5MM (2017), $21MM (2018-19) and $22MM (2020-21).
This deal makes Towers look like a genius. Goldy 5 years 32M. Dude needs to get a new agent.
