Alfonso Soriano is headed back to where his career began in 1999. The New York Yankees have apparently acquired the 37-year-old slugger from the Chicago Cubs in a trade that is expected to be finalized early Friday. He was a late scratch in the Cubs' lineup Thursday and was booked on a red-eye flight to New York. Soriano, a seven-time All-Star, is years removed from his prime but has proven he can still hit the long ball. He has gone deep 17 times this year, 10 coming since June 28.

The Atlanta Braves officially placed pitcher Tim Hudson on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, a day after he sustained a broken ankle that is expected to keep the right-hander sidelined for the remainder of the season. Hudson was hurt while covering first base in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game, suffering the injury when Mets' outfielder Eric Young inadvertently stepped on the pitcher's ankle. The Braves recalled pitcher Alex Wood to start Thursday's game against New York.

Alex Rodriguez says he is ready to play, but the New York Yankees said not so fast. A day after getting a bizarre second opinion on his strained left quad muscle, Rodriguez issued a statement through a publicist and said he wants to play Friday when the Yankees open a three-game series against Tampa Bay in the Bronx. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman held a conference call Thursday after Rodriguez was evaluated in Tampa and said the third baseman's quad injury has improved. Cashman, however, said the Yankees hope Rodriguez can begin simulated games or another rehab assignment by Aug. 1. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said during his media briefing before Thursday's game against the Texas Rangers that he wasn't sure when A-Rod would be available, but didn't think it would be Friday.
