He had a short career in Toronto. I wonder why they even bothered to pick him up. Maybe they auditioned him and it took them two months to figure out what it took Jack Z four years to figure out?

We gave up too much to drop him that quick, but good point non the less.

Turns out they actually just signed him to 1 year for $1 million.

I don't know enough about this. I'm assuming that by non-tendering him and making him a FA, it bypasses arbitration which might have guaranteed him more than $1 mill?

You got it. I read a tweet that said if they tendered him a contract and it went to arbitration Smoak would have received $3 million. Smart move by Jays.
