The Celtics had had Red Auerbach, coaching them for at least 5 years pre-Russell but had never won the big prize.
Auerbach knew a long time before most people that Russell was EXACTLY what his team needed to get over that hump.
Centers need to be rebounders more than scorers to win titles. Auerbach knew that, Russell knew that, but far too few other people really understand that.
Wilt Chamberlain was a much better offensive player than Russell and had some HOF teammates as well.
So how do you explain Russell's racking up more rings than Wilt The Stilt?
