It's too bad that he is likely leaving to coach the Texans, I was hoping he would wait to leave until after the sanctions were over and we could see what he could really do at the college level when he had a level playing field.

The only good thing about this is I'm sure some Penn State kids will begin to reconsider their commitment. Maybe Notre Dame can make a push for Holley although I don't think he was really considering them in his final choice.

o'brien's departure probably wouldn't affect things much here from a football perspective. he came in and did a remarkable job from a university and community perspective. he has helped return credibility to the school to a great degree and for that reason he would be sorely missed at first and always highly thought of as the right man at the right time here. the only ones who still crack stupid about psu are losers and no one cares much about them.

but he hasn't proven anything from a coaching point of view other than he isn't horrible (at least it's not evident yet).

I think he's shown that he is if nothing else a good motivator, I'm not sure how that will all translate to the NFL. Also I think he's done an excellent job recruiting given the limitations he has at PSU.

it would seem so but it might be a little too early to say how good his recruiting class may be.
and it would also seem he's a good motivator but everything was done under special circumstances. will he be so when things are normalized or when he's elsewhere? hard to say.

all i know is everyone here wants him to stay and wants the school board to do everything they can to keep him. i'm just saying that football-wise he still an unproven.

no chance. I would be shocked. He has to finish the job here first. Winning a NC with ND would be big and would go down as one of the best coaches ever to coach at ND. Lions don't look like they are going anywhere.

Haha. What NFL team would want him? He was a hot pick last year but not anymore. This season has ruined his chances at the NFL as of now in my opinion. NFL wants consistent winners that overachieve like Shaw from Stanford. Not a bum like Kelly.

I'm not saying that the coaching has made he happy this year but could anyone really expect much more than 9-10 wins with the bowl game with Rees at QB for the whole season.

So does ND and Kelly by and large underachieves with them too. Not sure he'd be the answer to the Lions' woes.

Well they lost a recruit last year so they would probably lose one this year. Also if he were seriously entertaining the NFL, why even bother hiring a DC.
