I have a Nikon D3100 and I am looking around for good quality lenses for it.

I really want to be able to get to get quality landscape photos (like city scenes) and be able to get a lot of it
I also really want to be able to get quantity photos of animals.

Granted I know the best ones cost over $1,600 and I can't really afford those right now.

Any ideas?

My sister is into Nikon cameras. Knows her stuff, she’s in real estate and takes tons of photos for her job. I’ll ask her about this.

I know it means nothing but right now I do have $200 to Amazon.... So that would be a very nice lense (at least for a beginner I'd think)

Thank you. Are they on the expensive side?

Two yrs ago I bought my wife a Canon EOS T5 Xmas because she's always wanted a nice DSLR...she's just now starting to use it (scared me for a while) and we've been looking into those larger zoom lenses to take landscape shots, etc as well...mostly to document our travels, but you could make some $ from this hobby.

So...I'm curious as to your findings. Most of the ones I've been seeing are 2-3 times the price of the camera so she needs to get a lot more serious about her hobby before we do that.

So far I have found tons of things on the Nikon website about the right lenses and all but they usually are starting at $1600 plus. Now that could be just because they are Nikon but I am also thinking that's truly the price this potential profession has.. which sucks.

Yep...kinda the same for me...$1200+ is what I've been finding and the darn camera only cost about $500 with the accessories.

Her brother has a freakin lens that can shoot the moon and you can see craters and stuff...he's been at it a long time, has 1,000s invested into it.

Not for the budget minded hobbyist!

You got that right... I mean I guess I could ask for some help for bdays and xmas (money wise) to get the lenses but I honestly would love to actually pay for them myself. I guess used could be cheaper but I don't want to buy used, don't care how "well" it has been maintained or where I buy it from

Lenses are where you should spend the money. The camera technology gets better year after year but a great lens will last you several generations of cameras. That said, you don't need a $1600 lens.

The ranges I posted are about right and you can get very good pictures. For the Nikon 3100, maybe starting with this and then learning what she wants from a lens is the right path:
Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR Nikon

It's a decently wide range and she can see if wide angle or zoom is preferred, if she wants something faster, etc.

What you should really get for landscapes is a very good, sturdy tripod. Don't go cheap - several hundred dollars.

And an actual flash for indoors. The on camera flash sucks.

Yeah I do have a tripod... It wasn't expensive at all but it seems sturdy enough...
