He advocated for the recruiting of Blacks at a time when it was not popular in the south to do so. He engineered the game that helped to integrate football in the South. The USC/Alabama matchup in the early 70's is what helped to bring in players of color to predominately white teams in the South. The Bear made that game happen via a good friend and golf buddy and the rest is history.
