Are new/good clubs really worth the expense?

If you are looking to shave strokes, practice your short game and focus on course management.

That being said, getting fitted is highly recommended. As far a club technology itself, woods will show the most improvement. I just replaced my 6-8 year old ones and can tell quite a difference

Absolutely agree ^^^^

Being able to get up and down around the greens on demand will save a ton of strokes. The thought process on or around the green needs to always be "in the hole in 2 strokes." Unless you're within 20 feet, then of course the focus should be more on making the initial putt. If you're taking more than 2 strokes then you're not saving par on most occasions and you're 100% never going to birdie.

Taking short game a little further...it starts with the approach...most of us weekend hacks miss on the wrong side of the hole, making up and down a lot harder to begin with.

It takes solid execution from various lies, low shot, high shot, etc. to be really good. But...at the end of it, you gotta make a putt....4 to 6' you need to make your share.

...it starts with the approach

True enough, but it really starts with the drive. The game is easy from the fairway, but in the rough, well everyone here knows that changes everything. It's amazing how many times I hit my drive into the rough/trees, and make bogie. If only I could hit the fairway 70% of the time. I'd be a happy camper.

Quick finger.

Especially if you're struggling 90...can't score in baseball w/o touching 1st base...yes, you gotta put the drive in play.

FW...to be honest, if I were able to put all 14 drives in the middle of the fairway...I still would probably hit the same about of GIR maybe 1 or 2 better and still be scrambling.

I used to play in the low,low 80's, and an occasional round in the 70's. Now, at 57 and after 7 orthopedic surgeries, I shoot from 88 to 92 almost every round. And that's hitting only 2-3 fairways a round! It's so aggravating.

I'm 77 to 85...with most of my rounds 82 to 85...I drive it pretty well, typically 8 drives in the FW, 1 drop every other round, 3 rough/punchout, etc., mostly 150 yd or less approach...my 2nd shot is hit or mis...when I'm on my best game...10+ GIRs and sub 80...but I'm normally in the 7 or 8 GIR range and scrambling on the others.

Thanks, for a once a week player I'm okay with my game...still frustrating to shoot 80-83, shaving those 2 to 3 strokes is hard for a once a week player imo...the course here are not real long, but can be tough...lot of tree lined FWs, elevation change and hazards.

I've only had 2 sub 80 (not hdcp adjusted) this yr so far.

Been so hot lately I have decided to take a few weeks off until after Labor day...less humidity this weekend, I'm going make the effort again.

I played over in a AL recently...RTJ Opelika is still my favorite...Ross Bridges my cousin just played, said it was nice, but all 54 holes...he thought Grand National was better.

Tell me about it. Here in Mobile, Alabama it's hotter than a finger effin fox in a forest fire.! Played yesterday, shot a 91. This course was a beeyotch.! Hit 3 tee shots about 10 yds off the fairway....lost all three. It was PGA rough...thick, deep, and nasty. I know you should get penalized for missing the fairway, but c'mon, this ain't the Tour....lol.
