Rizzo: $2M sign bonus, $750K in '13m $1.25M in '14, $5M in '15 & '16, $7M in '17 & '18, $11M in '19, cubs option $14.5M in '20 & '21

Do you get the feeling that Antony Rizzo undersold himself here? This looks to favor the Cubs by backloading the deal. I think if he had had more confidence in himself, he should have waited and done this later. If the Cubs are rebuilding, they didn't they frontload it and make it easier to trade him later if they needed to?

maybe they are trying to get him on the cheap while some larger and prohibitive contracts (soriano) burn off? So far Rizzo looks like a stud. I'm sure he loves being an instant millionaire now, and that $2M should get him through the year. He looks good enough to get more sooner, but those are mainly his arbitration years where he likely would have gotten those numbers if he did well anyways. Now he has it guaranteed no matter how he performs.

Plus, if he keeps doing well and keeps a clean image...he will bank on endorsement deals in Chicago, so there is more money he can hope for :)

Yeah, I'm sure the $2M will look very, very nice when it hits the bank account. I've always thought if I were a pro athlete, the first million I made would be locked up in a 12 month CD before I ever spent another cent. At some point very quickly making that kind of money, you realize that you can maintain a very decent lifestyle for the rest of your life if you never earn another cent. That's got to be a great feeling and then the more you earn, the higher your lifestyle becomes.

Still seems to me that it would have made sense to frontload this guy at least this year and next when they know they're probably not going to win.

It was a really great deal, just like with Castro. It is a bit backloaded, but that's OK, by that time we should have so many International players coming over here playing for cheap that we'll have plenty of money to spend on Rizzo without it being an issue at all. This guy could definitely be one of the top 1st basemen in the game very soon, and we got quite the bargain for him!

Rizzo wanted the generational security for his entire family. He didnt really fight for more money.

Once a player gets stupid money, they change. I expect the cubs to do longoria types of deals if Rizzo exceeds the numbers
