The US wasn't involved in the first 2 years of the war, so it would have been difficult. I was in a war, Vietnam. I was not in combat however, since I was in the Signal Corps.

The selection is actually based on a series of battery tests that you take when you were inducted. I did very well in the communications portion and I guess for that reason I was selected. I was originally sent to Germany, but volunteered after 2 months, because they didn't have an opening for my specialty.

The only ribbon I got was for Vietnam service, which everyone is entitled to. I don't recall ever using any VA benefits.
