In defense of the Pats, this has often been the case in sports history. The Niners benefited greatly from the NFC West being a joke back when they were winning big with Montana and Young, for example. Back then the Saints and Falcons were inexplicably part of that division, and they stunk.

And if you knew your team had no chance at winning the division, you'd get discouraged easily against all teams, now wouldn't you? 90% of sports is mental. That's why some guys are winners (Brady, Montana) and some guys flounder under pressure (Peyton, Marino).

Yes, and they had a couple of 10-6 seasons in the 80s. But the division also included the Saints and Falcons who were generally garbage. The Niners had relatively easy paths to the playoffs in that era. They won the division 8 out of 10 years. It's not the Pats' dominance, which is insane, but it is similar.
