Actually, this lineup, from Game 7 of the 1962 World Series, just pre-dates my lifelong love affair with the Giants.

And I never realized until now that apparently when McCovey and Cepeda were in the lineup together, that McCovey played LF, and Cepeda 1B. I always assumed it was the other way around.

Which caused me to wonder: How bad an OF must Cepeda have been to make the Giants put McCovey there instead?

He musta been pretty bad. When McCovey came up, for a couple of years they tried playing Cepeda at other positions. Then in '62 they switched and Cepeda played almost exclusively 1B, while McCovey played OF (and a little 1B) until Cepeda was injured, then traded.

At least it was probably hard to hit one over McCovey's head.

And, eesh, you're right. Cepeda's dWAR in 1962 was -1.6. In 1963 it was -2.2.

Ouch.

One last hysterical note - in 1959, Cepeda played 4 games at 3B, and made 3 errors, for a sparkling .625 fielding pctg.

So does Bochy pull Timmay after 6IP and 82 pitches?

I'm leaning that he should.

And the reverse jinx works!

Good to see Timmy pitching like this. I hope this is a sign of things to come...

Edit or do the Padres just suck?

This has got to be his last inning. Couple of deep fly balls and a walk.
