From what I read about Vogelbach, he was wanted by Yanks in an Andrew Miller deal. maybe we did alright then.

Dan Vogelbach | Rank: 20 (Preseason: 20)
Team: Iowa Cubs (AAA) ETA: 2017 Position: 1B Age: 23 DOB: 12/17/1992 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 6' 0" Weight: 250 lb.
Drafted: 2011, 2nd (68) - CHC

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 50 | Run: 20 | Arm: 40 | Field: 30 | Overall: 45
Vogelbach launched a 508-foot homer at the 2010 Power Showcase, breaking Bryce Harper's distance record at the international home run derby. He earned a $1.6 million bonus as a second-rounder and one of the best power hitters available in the 2011 Draft. While he has made steady progress and reached Double-A at age 22 last year, he hasn't had the impact the Cubs hoped for.

To his credit, Vogelbach is a more advanced hitter than expected. Rather than selling out for home runs, he controls the strike zone, makes consistent contact and uses the entire field. He still has obvious strength and raw power, though they translated into only a .436 slugging percentage in his first three years in full-season leagues.

Vogelbach will have to hit for more power to have big league value because he's extremely limited as a runner and defender. He has improved his conditioning since he carried 280 pounds on his 6-foot frame in high school, but he's still a baseclogger with little range at first base. Blocked by Anthony Rizzo with the Cubs, Vogelbach would be best served by a trade to an American League club so he could DH.

Was actually just going to make a thread on this.

Wow, great trade. I like Mike Montgomery, but Vogelbach looks like he could be a great acquisition in exchange for a bullpen arm.

Wonder if this indicates that the Mariners will be sellers.

This makes moving Adam Lind even more likely.

I say I wonder because I feel like the Mariners can still improve the team even after moving Lind and Montgomery. I don't feel as if either of them are huge losses. Lind has hit for power, but his OBP and average is pretty mediocre at this point and I'm comfortable with Dae-Ho Lee being full-time. Opens up the DH spot for Cruz.

Maybe now I'm just reading too much into this, but maybe that's why Aoki was called up. The Mariners probably anticipate moving Adam Lind and wanted another outfielder for when Cruz gets moved mostly to DH.

Interesting trade... This guy looks like a pure athlete....

I don't have a problem with moving Monty. It looks to me like Dipoto got pretty good value out of Monty. Vogelbach looks like a really good bat, nice combo of contact, power and patience. He can draw a walk and will put up low K rates.

Plus now Dae Ho can pinch run for him when we need more speed.

I like Blackburn too. He has been really good during his minor league career, very consistent, nice path through the minors.

Pries is nothing special just an add on balance move really.

RH starter with low 3 ERA at every step in minor leagues (5 minor league seasons, 2016 is first at AA). Comp pick (56th overall) by Cubs in 2012. Could be decent starter in majors, maybe 3,4 or 5 guy. Probably still couple seasons away.

That seems like the most likely scenario. Plus guys like Montgomery, Nuno and Karns are all guys who other teams would probably value as 5th starters with how teams in the WC hunt are soon going to have to reshuffle their rotations for the stretch run.

I guess getting a guy from the Cubs organization makes me feel good. They have done good work the last few years.

I'm optimistic since he is a prospect who is blocked by an all star unlike Smock who him and Davis rotated batting .150 and Montero who wasn't blocked at catcher. Or the countless trades that have backfired since I've been alive.
