The Royals really need to take care of business the next two nights to avoid losing any more ground on the Tigers.

To the surprise of a lot of people, including myself, the Royals are in the hunt for a playoff spot. With renewed expectations, fans are watching the Royals more and more. In the first game of the Royals - Red Sox series, Fox Sports Kansas City (FSKC) set a viewer ratings record. As the seasons winds down and each game becomes more and more important, fans are less and less likely to see the Royals on TV, especially on the weekends. How close will the Royals have to be to making the playoffs for FSKC to show all the Royals games?

At the beginning of the season, the Royals and FSKC set up a schedule to show 140 games. Most of the time during the season, the skipped games are get-away day games. This leaves 22 games not televised. So far of the 116 games played, only seven (or 6%) have not been shown on FSKC. Over the remaining 46 games, 15 of them will not be shown with the current arrangement. Basically the Royals will be not be showing one out of every three as the team makes a push towards the playoffs.

The agreed upon schedule is maintaining some consistency. It is not showing some day games before travel, but eight September Saturday and Sunday games not being shown. Four of the games are against the AL Central Division leading Detroit Tigers. Two are against the Texas Rangers, who the Royals are chasing in the wild card. Finally, the last two games of the season are not scheduled to be televised.

Two reasons exist for no weekend games at the season's end and both involve the F-word, football. First, Fox uses the cameras, which were to be used to broadcast the Royals games, for college (and sometimes pro) football games. Currently , there just aren't enough camera to go around. The second reason is no one would watch the baseball games because the [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U_EfE-mqgE"]Chefs[/ame] are on TV. This reason in understandable. With only one winning season since 1995, the Royals aren't usually playing for much over the baseball season's last month. Instead, the Chiefs season is just beginning.

So if the Royals continue to make progress closer to a playoff spot, will the fans not be able to see some crucial final games? Maybe and maybe not.

A little over a year ago, I interviewed the Royals V.P. Of Communication and Broadcasting, Mike Swanson. I asked him about this very subject:
Over the last couple of years, the September TV games seem to be really few and far between. Can they fix that if the team ended up competing in September?
And his response:
I think in the contract there is an out. That is where I think common sense will enter into things. If we are not scheduled to televise a game, but it will factor into the race, I think conversations between the two entities will fit it in and make it work. It is just a matter of dealing with the financial aspect of it because with every telecast, there is a rights fee for it. We hopefully will find a way to make it work. When that time comes, I am sure very reasonable men will get into the room or get on the phone and talk about it and get it figured out.
So the Royals and FSKC can work it out, but the real question is, will they? Truthfully, I think they will if the Royals are close. The question is, how close do the Royals need be. Currently, the Royals are six and half games behind the Tigers. Would FSKC, want to show the games versus the Tigers in September's first weekend if the two teams are this close. Is so, would they do it if the Royals are 8 games outs? If six and a half is not close enough, how close do the Royals have to be? Four games? Two games?

Also, the entities involved will need to decided when they will pick up the games. Fox will need to re-appropriate broadcast cameras they had allotted to other events for the Royals games. How much time will they need in advance? I am guessing a lest a week, but they only know for sure.

The Royals, FSKC and the fans have not been in this situation with the Royals playing meaningful baseball late into the season. In the past, it was not a huge deal to not broadcast weekend games over the season's last month. It will interesting to see how this dilemma gets resolved if the Royals keep winning and it gets closer to the first weekend when the Royals are not on TV. It will be a intriguing dance between all the entities involved.

Early game (1:10 central) today before heading to Detroit. Sure could use another series win. Erv Santana vs. Jacob Turner.

GO ROYALS!!!!

I see the Royals just acquired speedy super-sub Emilio Boniacio from the Blue Jays today. That will help them with their season long 2B problem, and he should provide a lot of speed on the bases going forward.

No idea who or what they had to give up in return.

Well now here is a serious head scratcher -

The Royals have agreed to terms on a minor league deal with first baseman Carlos Pena, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star ([ame="[MEDIA=twitter]372471211198271488[/MEDIA]"]Twitter link[/ame]). Pena will be assigned to Triple-A Omaha.
The 35-year-old Pena hit .209/.324/.350 in 325 plate appearances for the Astros this season after signing a one-year, $2.9MM contract with Houston in the offseason. He was designated for assignment and released in late July. In parts of 13 Major League seasons, Pena is a .233/.348/.465 hitter with 285 home runs.

Anyone want to put an understandable spin on why they signed him? I myself have nothing...

Moore seems to be pulling hard for the Stormchasers in Omaha to make the playoffs.... :laugh3:

Carroll actually hits over 300 vs LHP I guess, he is utterly useless against RHP obviously. The Carroll trade was just stupid. The Bonifacio and Maxwell trades make more sense to me.

Maxwell isn't going to end well...he is Jeff Francour 2.0....he will hit good enough for the Royals to sucker into signing him and he will be horrible after this year.....Boni was finally a great pick up...I hope we can keep him until we have a legit replacement at 2b...then still keep him.....we should have got a 2b/of all along....bad thing was I wanted the guy who got suspeneded, lol...for the Mets for the Biogensis thing at first....

Boni is the perfect super sub for the Royals....I hope the Royals don't sucker for Maxwell...

I still don't know why Chen, who was the royals, ummm Ace? the last two seasons wasn't in the rotation all year.....Shields, Guthrie, Duffy, Ventura and Chen/Santana or something of a proven commodity would be great next year....at worst.....W. Smith or even ok with trying Crow out.....everyone thinks Hochevar was a bust...but he is a great reliever, been calling for it for years....Crow was 1st round pick too...and has never got a shot at starting...Hoch got a pretty long leash?

Emilo Boni on the other hand was hands down the best move after the All Star break....but please, just release Carroll...That was painfull to watch him take AB's from anyone today.

And The 2013 Kansas City Royals Magic Number is now 1. Might as well call me Merlin, playas. Because elimination will sweep over Kansas City tonight. The sad part is the Kansas City Royals went all in this season and the best they could do is to barely manage a 500. record. Good Luck with Ervin Santana, and arbitration players like Eric Hosmer and Greg Holland. 2014 Kansas City Royals forecast. James Shields is gone by the trade deadline and the Royals go back to their sub 500. ways.

I am happy to see the final win total at 86, I was expecting a .500 team so I am pleasantly surprised.
No reason to take a step back next year with all the money at the Royals disposal, but I am happy for this season, and hopefully, many more after that. Lord knows we have had precious few things to be legitimately be happy about for quite some time in the KC sports scene.

great season, really after June 1st or even especially after they dumped the "we need more HR's" approach and batting coaches...let the kids bat...

Off season wants

1 veteran bat 29 to 34 yrs old, who can balance the young hitters out when struggling
1 veteran 28 to 33 yr old pitcher, who has at least 4 seasons in the majors, already had Tommy John, getting better and at least 1 or 2 really good years.
