After many years of trying to get approval from the War Department (AKA the wife), I am making my first trip to the Steel City to watch the Steelers. I used to go see them play every year against the Oilers, a few times against the Texans, in New Orleans a couple years ago, last year's game in Green bay, & the last playoff game against Denver in Mile high (that hurt me bad, have a scar on my liver from trying to kill the pain from that game). Being a fan since the 70's, I want to go to the restaurant that started Franco's Italian Army (if it still exhist). Other than that, I'm looking for suggestions. What else do I need to do while I'm in town? what is they best pay tail gate party?

Lil' Help & Here We Go Steelers!!!!!:suds:

Thanks Pride.

I'm open to suggestions. Having lived my life in the cowboy hell of Texas (Love Texas, hate how most cowboy fans act), I am just looking forward to being around Steelers fans and experiencing what it would be like to experience life as a Steelers fan in Pittsburgh. I've been told to go to Pirmanie's (I know that is spelled wrong). Is there anywhere to go to experience some Steelers history?

If you are into history... Then I would either go to Kennywood Park (Carnegie Mellon Museum of History) or head to Oakland (2 Art Museums), Downtown there's the Heinz History Center. Also you cannot go to Pittsburgh without visiting the Strip District. Plan on that occupying at least 2 hours because there is a lot to see. If you want to sightsee right away, take the incline up to Mt. Washington... There are a few places that you can eat lunch up there or you can head back down the incline and eat somewhere in station square. Point State Park is another great place to visit.

When going to the game... For 1st timers, I highly recommend parking in station square and taking the Gateway Clipper Shuttle Ferry. It takes you down the Monongahela river into the confluence and drops you off at the river entrance to Heinz Field. If that's not your bag, then consider parking on the North Shore (easiest). Also you can park downtown around Point State Park and take the Park trail across the Fort Duquesne Bridge (very scenic walk). Tailgating... My family's spot is on the north end of the main lot but I'm not always there. I usually meet my friends over at Redbeard's and walk down about a half hour before kickoff. Also if you choose to do the ferry ride over I would recommend eating/drinking at the Steelhouse since it's right next to the Ferry offices. Awesome food, beer & service.

Food... You MUST eat breakfast at Pamelas in Millvale or Shadyside. Best b-fast spot in town. Other great options: Bluebird Kitchen downtown, Dor-Stop in Dormont, DeLuca's on the Strip District. For lunches/dinners depends on your style... I'd recommend Primanti Bro's for 1st timers. Classy joints like Avenue B in Shadyside, Bar Marco in Strip District, Butcher & the Rye (downtown)... Sports Bars I'd recommend Grille 36 (Bettis' spot) next to Heinz Field, Redbeards downtown, or Steelhouse in station square. There are a lot of restaurants in station square... Franco owns 3 or 4? different restaurants in Pit so not sure which one you are talking about.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your stay!

Heinz Field has it all for Steelers history... Also, the Heinz History Center has an entire room dedicated to the football team's history. And it is more family friendly. It has games (football toss) for the kids.

I'd recommend both!

Wow. Thanks Face. Sounds like I need to make sure and bring my fat-pants.

My daughter is 17 and starts college next fall. She wants to be an architech. I saw there is a couple of Frank Loyd Wright homes in the area. Might check them out. Love the idea of the shuttle boat. We are staying at the Convention center. maybe there is somewhere to board around there.

What about night life for me and Mrs. Droop?

We're from Texas so we tend to enjoy country music over the other stuff, but have been known to go to a blues bar or piano bar. We both love live music.

A favorite spot of mine to eat when I visit is Max's Allegheny Tavern on the North Shore (but quite a trek from Heinz field, it's actually closer to PNC Park). Great German food and the potato pancake reuben is to die for.

This always makes me homesick. It doesn't even scratch the surface, however.

So far we have hit Pirmanti Bros, Peppi's, Carson Street and roamed the strip. All I can say is that since I got here on Friday, I havent had a single vegetable and other than morning coffee had a beer with every meal. I'm living on Yinglings & massive sandwiches. Having a blast and meeting many enteresting people.

Thanks for the tips.
