If anyone deserves a new contract, it's Delmon Young. He may not have Cruz's power, but his bat has been a huge addition to this lineup. He is batting 10 points over his career BA, 14 points over his career OBP. He is exactly what you want out of a bench player.

Let's reevaluate the situation again. To make up the 2.5 GB, the O's need to go 9-0 while the Angels go 6-2 or worse, or 8-1 vs. 5-3, or 7-2 vs. 4-4, etc. How realistic are these scenarios? Let's look at the remaining schedule:

• Angels: 2 games vs. Texas, 3 games @ Oakland, 3 games @ Seattle
  • The Rangers are on a hot streak, so let's say that the Angels go 1-1 for the rest of the series.
  • The A's are on a cold streak, but the season series is tied at 8-8. I could see the series going either way.
  • The Mariners have a slight lead in the season series (9-7)... so this series could also go either way.
  • That gives us a range of 3-5 to 5-3.

• Orioles: 2 games vs. Boston, 4 games @ New York, 3 games @ Toronto
  • I'll say that the O's take both of the remaining games against the Red Sox for now... but 1-1 wouldn't surprise me either (regression to the mean?)
  • The Yankees seem to be playing 0.500 ball recently, and the O's have a healthy lead in the season series (11-4). Since the series is on the road, I'd predict 3-1 here, with a 2-2 split being the worst case.
  • The Blue Jays seem to be on a cold streak, so a sweep might be possible. But the series is also on the road... so let's say 2-1.
  • That gives us a range of 5-4 to 7-2.

With that in mind, my prediction right now is that the O's barely miss out on the AL #1 seed by one game. Then again, that's why you play the games...

Assuming that the O's lose here, the team might as well rest up for the ALDS by playing only the subs for the next three games. After all, asking for a 3-0 record in three games while hoping that the Angels get swept is not realistic... and having the 2nd best overall record in the AL is nothing to be ashamed of.
